"Prinz Eugen" - Officers and composition
"Prinz Eugen" - Officers and composition
1.Who was the last CO of SS Frw. Geb. Rgt. 14 and successor of SS-Ostubaf. Wilhelm Breimaier after March 1945?
2.Did SS-Stubaf. Alfons Graf command I./SS Frw. Geb. Jg. Rgt. 2 between February and the summer of 1943?
3.After the reconstitution of II./SS Frw. Geb. Jg. Rgt. 14 (II./14) from the remnants of Rgt. KGr. "Skanderbeg" in the winter of 1945, who commanded this battalion? Otto Kumm mentions a certain SS-Hstuf. Zeidner as CO of III./14 in 1944.
Who was he? No such name appears in John Moore's Führerliste.
3.Who was the last CO of III./14? SS-Hstuf. Franz-Josef Krombholz or SS-Hstuf. Steidtmann?
4.When was the 2nd Kavallerie Schwadron absorbed into the Aufkl. Abt. 7 as 3. Kp.? When was the 1st Kavallerie Schwadron disbanded?
5.After the severe losses inflicted by the heavy fighting in the autumn of 1944, several units had to be disbanded (according to a scheme dated 3 November 1944, Vopersal Nachlass, Militärarchiv Freiburg): Aufkl. Abt. 7, IV./Art. Rgt. 7, Na. Abt. 7 (only a mixed Fe./Fu. Kp. was left), 14. (Pz. Jg.)/Rgt. 13 and 14, 2. (Jgd. Pz.) and 3. (Fla.)/Pz. Jg. Abt. 7.
Were any of these units ever reconstituted before the end of the war?
6.When in 1943 was SS Pz. Abt. (in fact only a company) "Prinz Eugen" disbanded and used to build SS Pz. Abt./V. SS Geb. AK, resp. SS Pz. Abt. 105?

Re: "Prinz Eugen" - Officers and composition
My knowledge of Prinz Eugen is very limited but here is what I have:
1. Wilhelm Breimaier left 16 March 1945 but I don't know who succeeded him.
2. Michael Gross was the CO of I./SS-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 2 from 01 February 1943 to 24 January 1944. Alfons Graf is all new to me.
3. The only name I have as CO of II./Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 14 in the winter of 1945 is Wilhelm Martens who was the CO at least in March 1945. Zeidner was a short term commander of III./Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 14 from 26 to 30 October 1944 between Heinrich Pensel and Franz Krombholz.
3. Erich Steidtmann was the CO after Franz Krombholz but I don't know if he was the last commander.
4. I simply do not know.
5. Don't know.
6. SS-Panzer-Abteilung 7 existed from 22 October 1943 to 17 June 1944.
Unfortunately I am not very sure about anything but this is the best I can do.

Pena V

Phil Don,
My files show Richard Rau as the successor of Michael Gross. Is your info certain? Mine unfortunately isn't.

Re: "Prinz Eugen" - Officers and composition
Kiitos Pena & Merci Phil,
The following sources were relevant for my trying to establish the CO list of I./2: John Moore's Führerliste (Moore), Otto Kumm's "Vorwärts Prinz Eugen" (Kumm), Bohumir Kudlicka & Radoslaw Szewczyk's "Prinz Eugen" (Kudlicka et al.), Kurt Mehner's "Die Waffen-SS und Polizei" (Mehner), Nachlass Wolfgang Vopersal, BA-MA, N756/150a & N756/150b (Vopersal), KTBs in AHF thread by John Moore of 23.09.2006 (KTB).
w.r.t. Alfred Graf: He is mentioned as CO of I./2 by Kudlicka (in 1943), by Mehner (on 2 July 1943) and by KTB (on 31 July 1943).
w.r.t. Michael Gross: He is mentioned as CO I./2, later I./14 by Moore (in July 1943), by Kumm (in June 1943 and on 8 Sept. 1943), by Kudlicka et al. (in 1943/44), by Mehner (till January 1944).
w.r.t. Waldemar Rau: He is mentioned as CO of I./14 by Moore (in February 1944), by Kumm (in mid February 1944 and on 5 October 1944) and by Vopersal (on 2 Nov. 1944 and in end of Dec. 1944)
From this, I assumed the following time line for I./2, later I./14:
Alfons Graf from February 1943 (succeeding Kaaserer) till early Summer 1943
Michael Gross from early Summer 1943 till February 1944
Waldemar Rau from February 1944 till late December 1944 (then succeeded by Schnelle, later Fischer)
Don't hesitate to shoot holes in my assumptions, and please let me know your source(s).
Maybe we can do this same exercise for II./2 (II./14) as well?
Frans

Re: "Prinz Eugen" - Officers and composition
Oops! Alfons Graf should be Alfred Graf.

Frans,
1. Your Finnish is excellent.
2. Have you tried the search function? Typing "SS Freiw Geb Rgt 14" gives you already 13 matches.
3. I have one Alfred Graf. As a Hauptsturmfuhrer he was the CO of 7./"Germania" at least in September 1940.

Pena V

Frans,
One more thing. You should take a look at this thread of 44 pages(!): SS-Division "Prinz Eugen" photos. It's located in the Heer, Reichswehr & Waffen-SS section of AHF.

I was wondering where to post the images below and decided on this section.
The lists of "Prinz Eugen" Divn members was taken in Sept 1947 at 272 PW Camp, Wolfsberg, Austria. Source is UK National Archives
