death of Jochen Peiper

Hello,

What are the suppositions about his death?

Who has assassinated him? I've heard that it could have been done by the communists who launched a nasty compaign against him at the time...

I think he was cleared of any criminal conviction.

The best account I've read of it was in "The Devil's Adjutant," but even that wasn't very extensive. AFAIK, nobody except the players know who really did it.

I read that he was assassinated too, in his home where he defended himself with a small calibre rifle or pistol? Can't be sure though. It's been a long time. Wasn't his house burned down as well in the episode or was he found shot to death?

PEIPER

Peiper affair started with a campaign of press by communist party of Saone et Loire in june 1976 against the "war criminal" Peiper.
For Case Ardennes 1944 Peiper was sentenced as commander of the LAH Regiment but it's historically proof that he was not direct responsible of the killing of 71 US soldiers of the 285 US Art batallion.
Case of Boves in Italy is less clear but that not the purpose.

Following this political campaign his EEC authorization to live in France ended in february 1977.

The arson of his house in july 76 was unclear and the identity of the burned man too.

arson :
1 cocktail molotov and fire shoots.
but experts find 3 fire departure in differents rooms.
dogs : his 2 drathaar were found at some km of Traves and not around the house where Jochen was died : unusual said an expert of dogs;
autopsy was not convincing :
no gold tooth found, his wounds can't be found on deeply burnt body, spinal column was in good condtion therefore his MD Dr Burghardt said he had a malformation. Head was lost between France and Germany during transfer for expertise !
his death fit to French justice : end of all procedure.
his wife will not have financial pb : she received a pension an a life insurance of 30 000 DM for his death

There is not one real truth but
at 61 y.o. 1.85 m and 80 kg Jochen was an active man. He could have decided to start a new life (Belgium, Argentina...)
note : one of his neighborouh at Traves was former SS Hauptsturmführer Erwin Ketelht . few after left too Traves. He was never seriously heard by french justice.

My purpose was not to avoid responsability of anyone.
but question is seriously by all researchers : was Jochem killed in his house ?

Yes, he was assasinated. And those who did it are pigs indeed.

Thank you! Very interesting indeed!

Do you imply that it's not impossible that he may have made it all up to cover a departure?

here is some info i was able to find about the death of jochen peiper.
In 1972 Peiper went to live in Traves, Haute-Saône, France, and supported himself as a translator of English-language military books into German. He sent his wife to safety in Germany following explicit death threats, but remained in France, arming himself with a shotgun and accompanied by his dog. He died on July 14, 1976 in a fire bomb attack on his house by an armed gang calling itself the "Avengers." The "Avengers" were never identified, but were suspected to be former Résistants or communists.

After release Peiper eventually went to live in Traves , Haute-Saône , France , and supported himself as a translator. Following explicit death threats, Peiper was murdered in a fire attack on his house on July 13 , 1976 . The attackers were never prosecuted, but were suspected to be French Communists .

source : http://www.waffen-ss.no/peiper.htm

In 1940, Peiper had gotten to know and love the area known in French as the Langresplateau. In those years, family acquaintances in Reutlingen had a conscripted French worker on their farm. It was at that time that the Berlin government negotiated an agreement with the Vichy government, that for every one voluntary French worker who came to Germany, two French POW´s would be permitted to go home. The French worker of the family whom Peiper knew was allowed to return to his family in France due to Peiper´s influence and Mr. Gauthier (already a pro-German French nationalist) never forgot the his kindness.

It was this selfsame Mr. Gauthier who when Peiper decided in 1957 to relocate in France with his family sold him a mill in the town of Traves. However, the mill was in urgent need of repairs - a task beyond the financial capabilities of Peiper. The former Obersturmbannführer SS Erwin Ketelhut bought the mill from Peiper, which enabled him to build a homestead well out of view high on the banks of the river Saone. There he and his small family lived in comparative peace for 16 years. There were the occasional threatening anonymous phone calls (are there any other kind?), but essentially he lived unmolested and was known in the small town simply as ´The German´. He used his old passion, his command of the French language to earn his living as a translator of various texts from one language into the other and vice versa.
On June 11th.1976 he went to the provincial capital Vesoul with the intention to buy some wire for a dog-pound he was building. The person who sold him the wire was a Frenchman – Paul Cacheux - from the former German province of Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine).

Paul Cacheux, the hardware store clerk, noticed Peipers slight German accent and decided to check the ´Brown List´. This list had been compiled by the communist party of France and had been circulated amongst its members as an aide in identifying alleged German war criminals or Frenchmen who had collaborated (such as the few former members of the SS division Charlemagne who had survived) with the German forces. Peiper had paid by check, a document which identified him clearly by name and address.

Cacheux found Peipers name on the list and immediately notified his superiors at the communist party. This resulted in an obscene hate-campaign against a man who had lived peacefully and productively as a citizen in his little home-built house. This infamous action was openly directed by he communist party. Their newspaper L´Humanité (...) printed an inflammatory article asking what this ´Nazi´ was doing in France. The communists printed flyers defaming Peiper as a criminal and promising to prepare him a ´hot July 14th. (French national unity day). These flyers were widely distributed in Traves, the little town which had been home to the long suffering Peiper family. The hatred unleashed had a surreal, Kafkaesque character, it was Old Testament type hatred, the sort which is impossible to fathom by a healthy thinking human being ...

One day previous to the attack, the 13th.of July, Peiper decided to send his beloved wife and daughter to their family in Germany. His wife had been suffering from cancer and Peiper was convinced he would be unable to protect his family adequately in case of an attack. He refused to leave his home fearing if empty it would be burned to the ground. The fear his friend Ketelhut would shoot at any attacker caused him to refuse his friend´s offer to spend the night at his house.

´No´, he said. ´There has been already too much killing´...

Ketelhut however insisted Peiper at least accept his hunting rifle, which he did in order to appease his good friend. ...

When the corpse of Peiper was found, it had been burned to a crisp. He was found lying on his bead – his hands and feet had been hacked off. ... and we must sadly conclude that this ... war hero died a horrible death.

... after inflicting horrible tortures on this war hero ... had assured the total destruction of the home by pouring a mixture of heating oil, used motor oil and gasoline on the floors of the house which resulted in heat so intense, that his body did not burn, but rather was carbonized, ...

In January 1957 he started to work for Porsche in Frankfurt. Syndicates demanded his dismissal. Afterwards he worked for VW in Stuttgart, but there he was dismissed as well because of leftist agitation. With this he realized that he could not remain any longer in Germany and moved with his family to France. During the offensive in 1940 he had become acquainted with the region around the Langres Plateau and already at that time he loved it as a beautiful and quiet place. He then helped a French POW, a German-friendly nationalist, who had to work in Reutlingen for some relatives of Peiper like a forced labor convict in a garage. But there was a regulation between France and Germany, enabling the release of two French POWs for every voluntary worker willing to work in Germany. On Peiper’s recommendation that man, Gauthier, was allowed to return to his family. He had not forgotten Peiper and as he had to leave Germany in 1957, it was Gauthier who helped him and sold him the watermill of Traves. That building was in bad condition and Peiper did not have the necessary financial means to restore the mill. SS-Obersturmbannführer Erwin Ketelhut has afterwards taken over the water mill and in 1960 Peiper made build a house in Spannplate, high up on the bank of the Saone, hidden by bushes, not to see from the streets and like a military fortification. He had lived there – despite threats and anonymous phone calls – quite peacefully for over sixteen years.

On July 11th 1976 he bought some wire for a kennel in a shop in Vesoul, the capitol of that department. The salesman was an Alsatian: Paul Cacheux, member of the communist party, recognized through his accent that he was German and asked him whether he had been in France during the war. Peiper paid with a check with his name and address on it. Paul Cacheux looked up Peiper’s name in the "brown list" where all wanted Germans were registered. He passed his data over to the Resistance. On June 22nd 1976 the French communist newspaper "L’Humanité" wrote: „What does this Nazi do in France?". It was demanded to force Peiper to leave France. Flyers showing Peiper as a war criminal and Nazi were distributed to people in Traves. "Peiper, we’ll deliver you a 14 July!" was smeared on walls. July 14th is of course the French national holiday.

The morning of July 13th Peiper sent his wife, suffering from cancer, back to Germany. He himself did not want to leave his house because he expected it to be burned down. His neighbor Ketelhut had suggested to pass the night in the water mill but Peiper rejected that offer. He did not want Ketelhut staying with him either, since he would have shot any attackers. "No", he said, "It’s been already killed enough." Jochen Peiper waited on the veranda of his house from where he could observe the Saone river. Erwin Ketelhut had lent him his rifle. ...

... Obersturmbannführer Jochen Peiper’s body was found charred and only one meter in size, he had no hands and feet. He died at about 1:00 am. The house was burned down, the ceiling broken in. What happened between 11:30 pm and 1:00 am? Was the Obersturmbannführer alive when he was mutilated? Was he still alive when he was burned? The culprits had poured gas on the floor, lit with a mixture of petrol and motor oil. Peiper lay in his bedroom, on the left side with his back to the wall, one arm bowed before his chest. Nothing had fallen upon him. He died by the immense heat. The body was not cremated but shrunken.
