I don't know whether he died in Siberia or not; he certainly wasn't elderly when he died and it could have been under "duress" in the gulag. His liability for crimes while Schutzhaftlagerfuhrer at KL Mauthausen was most likely very limited. Most SS-TV officers who served on the staffs of the pre-war camps, but who transferred to other capacities after September 1939 never faced war crimes charges. The conditions of the protective custody camp at Mauthausen during Scheungraber's very short tenure in 1938-39 differed little from Dachau, Buchenwald or Sachsenhausen during this late pre-war period; only in late 1939 did Mauthausen begin to acquire its uniquely barbaric and singular reputation as the most brutal of the Reich camps. While harsh, the scope of criminality in the pre-war camps did not begin to approach the levels that occured with wartime food rationing, the explosion and stratification of the camp populations due to the influx of foreign prisoners after Sep 1939, and the general annihilatory pressures on the camps once war started. That Scheungraber transferred back to SS-TV Brandenberg in 1939 then to the Waffen SS may speak to his "suitability" or, lack thereof, for camp work. Most schutzhaftlagerfuhrers were or became "professional" camp thugs who created their own niche within the camp system and spent most of their SS careers at the epicenter of the protective custody camp, where they were lords of the camp. Many, if not all, camp kommandants served as schutzhaftlagerfuhrer at some point in their careers.
