#1

Post by Minotauros » 29 Oct 2003, 09:39

Dear Friends !

Who can provide me the names of the 22 defendants of a "Flyer Case" tried before an US Military Court in Dachau. 16 of the defendants including SS-Gruppenführer Jürgen Stroop (HSSPF Rhein-Westmark) and SS-Oberführer Dr. Hans Trummler (KdS Rhein-Westmark) were condemned to death on 21 March 1947 for the murder of captured USAF officers and soldiers between October 1944 and March 1945.

Thank you !

Case Nos. 12-2000; 12-390A; 12-391; 12-565; 12-1872; 12-1892; 12-2127; 12-2182; and 12-3188 (US vs Jurgen Stroop et al) Tried 21 Mar 1947

Albrecht, Wilhelm
Best, Georg
Eichel, Hans
Fay, Bernard
Fuehr, Arthur
Girke, Fritz
Goehrendt, Wilhelm
Goss, Erwin
Hammann, Philipp
Hellenbroich, Heinz
Hoehler, Wilhelm
Kiwitt, Josef Johann
Lassak, Julius
Michely, Heinrich
Moller, Hermann
Nahrgang, Paul
Raaf, Michael
Somann, Otto
Stattmann, Karl Franz
Stroop, Jurgen
Trummler, Hans

Of the men condemned to death, I have only been able to confirm the Landsberg-am-Lech prison executions of Kiwitt (on 15 Oct 1948) and Trummler (on 22 Oct 1948). As you probably know, after his conviction by the American military tribunal, Stroop was extradited to Poland, put on trials for war crimes there, sentenced to death by hanging 8 Sept 1951, and executed at Warsaw on either 6 Mar 1952 (Encyclopedia of the Third Reich p. 926) or 9 Jul 1952 (SS: Roll of Infamy p. 165).

As has been my custom in the past, I'm going to transfer this thread to the ABR section of the forum, whose learned readers may have even more information on this trial.

The death sentences of Hoehler and Moller were commuted to life imprisonment on 22/11/1947
Michely's sentence was likewise commuted on 14/1/1948

The others (except Stroop) were hanged in Landsberg Oct - Dec 1948

Anyone know the specific posts/crimes of any of the individuals?

Hello Helly Angel,

thanks but the real name is Hans Eichel not Hans Eichele.
Hans Eichel was SA-Oberführer and Polizeidirektor in Offenbach.

Thank you all for your informations !

Here are some precisions:

SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Polizei und der Waffen SS Jürgen Stroop, former HSSPF Rhein-Westmark, was tried along with 21 other defendants in Dachau in March of 1947 by an US General Military Court, file Nr. 12-2000.

The judges were:

- Brigadier General (USAF) Kiel - President
- Colonel Jacob Bechtold
- Colonel Earl B. Dunning
- Colonel Frank A. Hunter
- Colonel Harry R. Pierce
- Colonel William W. Robertson

The general attorneys were:

- Lieutenant Colonel John S. Dwinnel, an excellent and well known lawyer from Brooklyn, NY
- Captain William R. Vance
- Nathan Frieske, a civilian lawyer

Stroop was represented by two attorneys:

- Lieutenant Colonel William Berman
- Major Keene Saxon

The charges were: incitation to murder and murder of unarmed prisoners of war.

The victims were:

- An unidentified USAF private, murdered on 3 October 1944 near Giessen.
- Sergeant William P. Perry, ID Nr. 36 591 162, murdered on 19 October 1944 in Wiesbaden.
- Sergeant Robert W. Garrison, ID Nr. 33 355 463, murdered on 30 December 1944 in Delkenheim.
- Private Ray R. Herman, ID Nr. 0-695 168, murdered on 15 February 1945 in Bensheim.
- Lieutenant William A. Duke, ID Nr. 0-825 602, murdered on 22 February 1945 in Bieber.
- Lieutenant Archibald B. Monroe Jr., ID Nr. 0-834 852, murdered on 22 February 1945 inOffenbach.
- Private James R. Heathman, ID Nr. 37 630 603, murdered on 18 March 1945 in Wallrabenstein.
- First Lieutenant William H. Forman, ID Nr. 652 973, murdered on 24 March 1945 near Bensheim.
- Private Robert T. McDonald, ID Nr. 32 773 939, murdered on 24 March 1945 near Bensheim.

Stroop was accused of being directly responsible for the death of five of those USAF soldiers (W. P. Perry and four others that I’m not able to precise).
He defended himself arguing that he just followed Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler’s secret orders – to kill captured US bomber’s crewmembers and to cover the whole affair as a “spontaneous lynch” by the population. He heavily charged his fellows, posing as the innocent one, calling them “file and rank scum”. 13 of them were condemned to death by hanging (including SS-Oberführer und Oberst der Polizei Dr. Hans Trummler, former BdS Rhein-Westmark) on 21 March 1947. Stoop was the fourteenth.

The sentences were approved by General Lucius D. Clay on 22 November 1947.

Stroop was at that time in jail in Poland (he was extradited on 31 May 1947) waiting for his trial for the liquidation of the ghetto of Warsaw in 1943. He was condemned to death on 23 July 1951 (his trial lasted three days) and hanged on 6 March 1952, on 7 pm, at the Mokotow Prison (Warsaw).

Dr. Hans Trummler (born on 24 October 1900) was hanged in Landsberg-am-Lech on 22 October 1948.
