Aktion Reinhardt

#1

Post by Schmauser » 20 Jun 2002, 19:06

Eleven officials of the Aktion Reinhardt were either killed, ambushed or assassinated by Italian Partisans near the end of the war, I only know of Wirth, Reichleitner, Schwarz & Pötzinger, who were the others?

Per Mark Yerger, SS-Oberführer Julian Scherner was killed in action on 28 April 1945. This officer is mentioned quite frequently in Thomas Keneally's "Schindler's List." That author states he was ambushed and killed by Italian partisans in the forests of Niepolomice. Scherner was SSPF "Krakau" from 4 August 1941-1 March 1944 and set up the camp at in Plaszow, Poland.

I noticed the previous thread about the corruption case. Per Yerger, Scherner was tried by an SS court for benefiting from the proceeds of the camp at Plaszow. He was reduced in grade to SS-Hauptsturmführer der Reserve and transferred to the Dirlewanger Brigade. Yerger notes the camp commandant (no name) was sent to prison.

It just occurred to me that the commandant of Plaszow was SS-Untersturmführer (later SS-Hauptsturmführer) Amon Göth. This officer, played by Ralph Fiennes in the movie, figured prominently in "Schindler's List."

Thanks Shawn,

That's some great info. I knew about Amon Göth being sentenced to prison, but I never knew the fate of Julian Scherner. Do you know of anymore? Thanks Again :D

In "The Good Old Days" edited by Ernst Klee, Willi Dressen & Volker Riess, there is a Karl Gringers listed as "Posted to Hadamar, Hartheim and Belzec. Killed in Italy in 1944." The editors also list Karl Pötzinger, Gottfried Schwarz, and Christian Wirth as being killed in 1944.

Thanks for the kind words! :D

Unfortunately, 1944 is all that is given in the book for Gringer's date of death.

- SS-Ustuf. Schwarz Gottfried Johann

KIA in San Pietro on 19.06.1944.
He should be buried in Costermano but not listed on the Volksbund.

- SS-Scharführer Richter Kurt

KIA and buried in Trieste, not on the Volksbund.

Hello,

A great place for researching this subject is a website called Aktion Reinhard Camps. Plenty of useful information.

Best,

James

Thanks James, but still cannot find Schwarz nor Plikat in Costermano.
There's just a:
Franz Schwarz ruht auf der Kriegsgräberstätte in Costermano.
Endgrablage: Block 7 Grab 1456
Nähere Informationen zu diesem Friedhof erhalten Sie hier.
Nachname:
Schwarz
Vorname:
Franz
Dienstgrad:
Stabsgefreiter
Geburtsdatum:
08.08.1916
Todes-/Vermisstendatum:
16.06.1944

But it doesn't looks like him.

I note with interest that some of the obvious names such as Christian Wirth, Schwarz, Reichleitner, etc are no longer listed on the Volksbund database, I know Wirth was reported as removed a couple of years ago.

Some of the less well known names are still there and still shown as Costermano.
