This cemetery contains the remains of German soldiers who died whilst in British and American captivity in the British Isles, both during and post-war. There are a few graves of German personnel who could have been executed, but the information surrounding these is scant and the cemetery supervisor I spoke to a few years ago refused to give any information about them.

Not too far away from von Herff's is the gravestone of SS-Ostubaf Dr Hellmut Tanzmann,
Gestapo man and KdS in France and Norway. He was a suicide in British custody.

Hi,

Thanks for posting this photo, I only recently learned of this cemetary, I pass by Cannock Chase on my way up to Shropshire and one day I would love to stop and pay my respects.

Out of interest, does anyone know how Gen. von Herff died?

Was he due to be arraigned for war crimes?

Thanks
