#1

Post by Timo » 01 Feb 2004, 22:23

Theo Gernt passed away. Gernt, born on 08.03.1923 in Huttendorf as Theodor Jirschitschka, entered the AA LAH in 1940 and served in this unit throughout the war. He was awarded the Panzervernichtungsabzeichen(01.09.1944), Nahkampfspange in Silber (01.09.1944) and the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold (30.12.1944). In the first years after the war, Gernt was an important witness for the defense of his commanding officer Gustav Knittel during and after the Malmédy Trial.
During his last years Gernt suffered from several problems related to his high age, including the loss of his eye sight.

Hallo Florian,

Unfortunately I don't have the exact date. A veteran told me about Gernt's dead. Willi Weber, the last Spieß of 3./SS AA 1 also past away recently. The group of veterans is getting smaller and smaller.

Regards,
Timo

I don't know. I've once heared that this was indeed the reason why he changed it. Could be, but on the other hand many others did not change their Polish names.

Perhaps for some the future was more important than their own past.

For example some men from Gernt's SS AA 1 who did not change their name despite the Polish or eastern European "sound":

ANDRUSIAK, Erich
CZIENSKOWSKI, Ernst
CZURD, Karl
DABERKOW, Paul
FRANKOWIAK, Erich
GESCHOREK, Walter
GOCWINSKI, Franz
JENDREIZIK, Willi
KOLLATSCHNY, Erich
KONSCHAK, Gerhard
MACZKOVIAC, Kurt
MOTZKI, Walter
OLSZO(C)K Georg
RAMSCHPEK, Reinhold
SCHARLEWSKI, Bartholomäus
SEDLACZEK, Karl
SIERONSKI, Hans
WAûSCHKIES, ?
WAWRZINEK, Emil

Dear Timo

I think only these men which believes because of their polish name they were not member of the "Herrenrasse".

But who knows the real reason.

Greetings

While going through my letters from the late Martin Leidreiter (because I'm working on a short article about him) I came across these recollections. For those who are interested", this is how Leidreiter remembered DKiG Träger Theo Gernt...
