SS-Obersturmbannführer Hans von Reitzenstein

Hey guys!

I remember reading somewhere about some controversy regarding the death of Reitzenstein. I think this was on the "Das Reich" site, which apparently is no more. :( Apparently, there was a feud between Christian Tychsen and Reitzenstein that lead to Reitzenstein's suicide in November of 1943. I have tried to find more info on this incident but I can't find anything. Would anybody be able to help? Thanks in advance!

Wolfkin,

Dan Reinbold's Das Reich site will very soon (as in today or tomorrow) be available again at the http://www.dasreich.ca address.

"Due to events surrounding the death of a popular Hiwi (Russian mess volunteer) von Reitzenstein committed suicide in November, 1943. "

from Dan's Das Reich web site.

Thank you Marcus and Tolga!

Hey, I just checked and the site is back! Not as much as I thought, I must be remembering wrong. Does anybody have any more info on this event? How was Reitzenstein involved in the death of this Hiwi and where does Tychsen fit in?

Also, since some sites are coming back :), does anybody remember the excellent Wheels Of Terror: The Leibstandarte Tigers site? It disappeared about a year or so ago. Anybody know why?

Thank y'all much!!

SS Das Reich - Ostubaf. vom Reitzenstein's suicide

Posted by Matt on July 07, 2001 at 06:07:31 from 198.142.83.182 / adlax4-182.dialup.optusnet.com.au

Can anyone tell me why Reitzenstein committed suicide? I am aware that he did it after being charged with off-duty misconduct. Something about a Russian Hiwi. What were the circumstances of his crime exactly? Any help appreciated.

I heard a very interesting story about that from a man who spent a lot of time researching the 2nd SS Panzer Division--especially Christian Tychsen. He even had the gas mask of SS Corporal Lemke, who was Tychsen's driver and was killed with him. I will not personally vouch for the accuracy of this story, except to say that I believe it has the ring of truth. Draw your own conclusions.

Some of the kitchen Hiwis were Ukrainian females. One was quite attractive, had a good personality, and was liked by everybody. According to the story, Reitzenstein raped her. This was a crime under the Nazi racial laws, even if the sex was voluntary. She was a Slav, an Untermensche (subhuman), and even voluntary sex with her would have been a serious offense, especially for an SS officer. Christian Tychsen was particularly outraged--or perhaps he was just angling for promotion and Reitzenstein was in the way. According to the investigator, the survivors of the 2nd SS he spoke with were divided on this issue. In any case, an official investigation was launched. Reitzenstein shot himself to keep from being court-martialled and disgraced. The investigation, of course, was then quietly dropped. Reitzenstein's friends, of course, never forgave Tychsen.

Excellent fgopper!

That is exactly what I remember reading about a while ago!

Thanks dude!

Where did you find this?

Do y'all think Tychsen was genuine in his anger or seeking promotion?

Wolfkin,

Glad i was able to be of some help.

Found it on another forum a year ago; i do not know if it is still available. The forum has gone through some changes and i have been unable to access the last few days.

Sorry, i cannot offer an informed opinion on Tychsen's motivations; it's not an area i have any detailed knowledge of.

I wish you well,
fgopper

"An officer of the Das Reich cited to the author an example of his division's gentlemanly code: in Russia , a colleague was found to have committed some aberration with a Russian woman and was at once ordered to go to his quarters and shoot himself. He did so."

Thank you, Harry, that is interesting.

So, it wasn't suicide after all. He was ordered to shoot himself!

I think this officer is either Fritz Langanke or Ortwin Pohl.

Does anybody knows how to contact that man? Or possibly has he written books or articles?
