Erich Gatternig (Dr.Med.) was born in Rottenstein (Kärnten) on 20.07.1907. SS-Nr. 20 241) He died in Winklern on 26.07.1996

He became IVb of AA LSSAH when this unit was raised in Metz in late 1940. He stayed with this unit until he followed Kurt Meyer to the Stab of SS-Pz.Gren-Rgt. 25, again as IVb.

Hi,

what was the last rank of Dr. Erich Gatternig? In the article of Oberstab he was SS-Standartenführer but I think he was only SS-Sturmbannführer (30.01.1943).

Commissioned Ranks:
Commissioned: 30 January 1935
SS-Obersturmführer: 1 March 1940
SS-Hauptsturmführer: 1 September 1941
SS-Sturmbannführer: 30 January 1943
Source: http://www.kvhwest.com/index.php?id=egatternig

Zařazen: 30.1.1935
SS-Obersturmführer: 1.3.1940
SS-Hauptsturmführer: 1.9.1941
SS-Sturmbannführer: 30.1.1943

From ??-4-1934 till ??-3-1935 he succeeded Dr. Oskar Morawek as CO from 87. SS-Standarte 'Tirol'. Apparently he was already SS-Hauptsturmführer at that point. So either this was an Allgemeine-SS rank or he wasn't SS-Hstuf at all when he commanded this Standarte.

I have no information if the Canadian War Crimes investigation team ever followed up on this . It's dated 1946, two years before the clipping posted earlier states that he was sentenced in Austria to 22 months imprisonment and deprivation of his doctorate.
