Mengele's Medal

Postby MrFurious on 29 Mar 2002 04:33

Hello,

I've found that Josef Mengele won the Black Wound Badge, and also a medal described as "The Medal for the Care of the German People". Has anyone ever heard of that medal before, or know what its real name is? I can't seem to find any reference anywhere to this medal, other than on pages about Hauptsturmfuhrer Mengele. It seems they all copied their info from Geralf Posner's amazing book on Mengele. Alas, no further info on his medal seems available...

Mengele's award...

Postby Michael Miller on 29 Mar 2002 21:26

It is possible that this is a reference to the "Ehrenzeichen fur Deutsche Volkspflege" (the German Social Welfare Decoration), similar in design to the distinctive German Red Cross decorations which came in a variety of grades and classes. Basic design was a large white cross with a black eagle/swastika, its wings lowered.

Best wishes,
~ Mike Miller
