Civil War/Indian Wars McClellan relic saddle

Postby Mark in Cleveland, Tn. on 30 Jul 2012 02:25

I stumbled across this today at my favorite antique(JUNK) mall. All the straps/hardware is intact, but has some serious dry rot condition issues. Also has some leather missing from wood saddle frame. This is the black leather one, not the post WW1 Russet Brown leather ones.

Got it super cheap @$20.00.
By the tme I get through with it, it will more than likely be a *Indian Wars, vet bringback, just discovered in the *woodwork** in a desert hide-a-way

Dear MIC,
This could have been to Peking to relieve the legations for all you know. Any markings on it?

Dear MIC,
Oh, well. It had some potential for discussion of the 6mm Lee Rifle of the Marines vs. the 0.30-40 Krag-Jorgenson Rifle of the Army.

Hi Guys,

A little diversion.

In Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Johnson's saddlery in Salisbury (now Harare) was still producing MaClellan saddles for the armed forces until 1980. They had a fibreglass core and second rate units such as my eight-man mounted stick (section) had them with no leather covering at all. However, proper mounted units such as the Grey's Scouts had the full leather furniture.

Cheers,

Sid.
