Hi Italo. I am sorry but I have no knowledge of the Italian soldiers shown in my father's photos, nor of their military unit. As far as I know they met the Hungarians there by accident. My father never mentioned his unit interacting with Italian soldiers, and I only know about it through these photos. Regards, George

Hello to all :D; a little complement (after a while)........................

The Carpathian Army Group in 1941.

The Carpathian Army Group was formed with the 1st Mountain Brigade (Munkács), the 8th Border Guards Brigade (Munkács) and the Mobile Corps (Gyorshadtest), consisting of the 1st Motorized Rifle Brigade (Budapest), the 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade (Munkacs) and the 1st Cavalry Brigade (Nyiregyháza). The Mobile Corps started the campaign with eighty-one 38M Toldi II light tanks, forty-eight 39M Csaba armored cars and sixty 35M Ansaldo tankettes. General Ferenc Szombathelyi, commander of the VIII Corps, now became the Army Group’s new commander; General Bela Miklos, was the commander of the Mobile Corps.

Elements of the 8th Border Guards Brigade began advancing on June 27th. Their first task was to clear the passes over the Carpathian mountain range. The 8th Frontier Guard Brigade reinforced with the II and VIII Bicycle Battalions and two horse drawn artillery batteries of the II/24th Artillery Regiment advanced through the Uszok, Vereczko and Toronya passes. The bicycle mounted infantry advanced rapidly and took the towns of Turka, Beskid and Vyazkov within a day or so. Soviet forces conducted several strong counter attacks, but the Hungarians manage to beat them back. The two Bicycle Battalions quickly outpaced the foot infantry, crossed the Dniester River on July 6th and advanced as far as Tluste just north of Zaleszezyki. On June 28, in the morning, the bulk of the Army Group went to the general attack without the concentration of the Mobile Corps was completed. On June 28, in the morning, the bulk of the Army Group went to the general attack without the concentration of the Mobile Corps was completed.

The Mobile Corps provisionally with only with the 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 1st Mountain Brigade, crawled through difficult mountainous terrain against stubborn Russian resistance. The Motorized Brigade attacked along the road through the valley; the Mountain Brigade advanced on the heights on both sides. The demolitions carried out mercilessly on the only route leading forward, Körösmezö-Tatarow-Delatyn and the minefields emplaced in the upper valley of the Prut aggravated the movements; therefore the Motorized Brigade could not carry out any mobile operation.

The Mobile Corps won only 10 kilometers in four days and on July 1 reached the heavily defended Tatarow. However, progress was made easier because north of Mikuliczyn only few bridges had been destroyed. The 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade already took Delatyn on July 02 and Kolomea on July 03.

Hello to all :D; a little more........................

The Carpathian Army Group in 1941.

After finishing its mobilization, the 1st Motorized Rifle Brigade marched on June 30 from its peace's garrisons around Budapest. After crossing the Tartars Pass on July 2 it continued by Tatarow, Mikuliczyn and reached the area of Kolomea - Sniatyn on July 5. Its first task was to cover the south wing of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade deployed in Zaleszczyki and Horodenka.

While the 1st Cavalry Brigade gathered by Körösmezö, Borkut area on July 02, sent ahead the two regiments of hussars and the horse-drawn batteries to Delatyn where they arrived on July 5; in that area were already its cyclists battalions and motorized elements.

The 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade managed to cross the river in Zaleszczyki on July 7 without substantial losses. It was followed by the 1st Motorized Rifle Brigade on July 8, which reached the same day the lower river Seret and Tluste. On July 9, it crossed the river Zbrucz in Skala. Hence the Fast Corps reached the border between Poland and Russia in 1918 and crossed it with the advanced units.

Therefore, the operations of the Carpathian Army Group reached their conclusion. It was dissolved on July 9. Now the Fast Corps continued its march eastward with the units of the German 17. AOK.

Hello to all :D; a little more........................

The Carpathian Army Group in 1941.

The 1st Mountain Brigade gathered in the area Kolomea and Horodenka while the 8th Border Guards Brigade in Stanislau, Buczacz. There they had to clean these areas of scattered Russian troops and partisans and by the end of August, after be relieved successfully by German troops, were transported back to their homeland.

On the behavior of the Russians it can say in summary, that not opposed strong resistance against the Carpathian Army Group. In the mountain passes of the Carpathians, the Russians deployed rear-guards at regiment level, reinforced with artillery and mortars. They did not use tanks in this area of operations. The Russians used largely minefields and destruction to a depth of 25-30 km, mainly on roads and rail targets. Russian rearguard deployed at Tatarow, Skole, Turka and Wyszkow - were quickly bound and forced to a withdrawal. Therefore the Hungarian troops had greater problems for the destruction of bridges etc., which slowed their movements more than the resistance of the Russians.

The Fast Corps in Ukraine in 1941.

The role of the Fast Corps was to advance on the north bank of the Dniester, as quickly as possible to take the railway junction at Shmerinka, along the upper Bug on Gajvoron to Pjerwomajsk (Olwiopol) in order to advance and from Bessarabia to the northeast in order to cut the route of the retreating Russian to the Bug, securing also the south wing of the 17th Army.
