Monarchies v. Facism: My Research Topic

Postby Friedrich Werner on 07 Oct 2009 17:09

I am an old forum member from back in the 2003-2005 era whose made a new username. I hope this topic is well placed and not already been over discussed (I searched for it and found nothing). if this is the wrong forum for this I appologize!

...

I am doing an independent study in my 4th year at the University of Richmond, VA with a professor whose focus is the Balkans and Eastern Europe. My research topic is: The Monarchies of Eastern Europe and the Balkans from 1918-1945 and their relationship with the Facist parties in their respective States. I have been reading thus far about Romania's Iron Guard Party v. King Carol II, The interwar Fascist Parties in Hungary v. Admiral Horthy. I am aware of and plan to research King Zog of Albania and the Italian Fascist party in Albania (did they have a specific name?), King Alexandar of Yugoslavia and King Boris III of Bulgaria later this semester.

I am really trying to look at Romania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania and any other monarchies (threw in horthy for good measure) that fit the bill and how they reacted to fascism abroad and more specifically inside their countries.

Books, which had relevant sections that I've read thus far:
-"Hungarians: 1000 Years of Victory in Defeat"
-"Romania in World War II"

Books I might read:
-"King Zog of Albania: Europe's Self-Made Muslim King"
-"Alexsandar of Jugoslavia: Strong Man of the Balkans"
-"Crown of Thorns: The Reign of King Boris III of Bulgaria, 1918-1943"
-"Balkan Strongmen: Dictators and Authoritarian Rulers of Southeast Europe"

Could anyone help me out with a little information? I.e.
- List of Fascist Parties in those Countries during the given time period (interwar years and wwii)
- Books/ Articles that would relate to my research topic
- Anything else useful ;)

Thank you so much for your time and help,

vr,
Werner

Hi Werner,

For an overview of the right radical and fascistic movements in Hungary and Romania, I would strongly recommend:

Nagy-Talavera, Nicholas. The Green Shirts and Others: A History of Fascism in Hungary and Romania. Center for Romanian Studies, 2000 (First published 1970) by Nicholas

This one might also be helpful:

Haynes, Rebecca. Romanian Policy towards Germany 1936-40. Palgrave MacMillan; 1st edition 2000 by

In the case of Yugoslavia, this may not be of direct relevance to your topic, but try checking out:

Tomasevich, Jozo. War and Revolution in Yugoslavia 1941-1945: Occupation and Collaboration. Stanford University Press. 2002.

Just off the top of my head.

Regards,

Rebecca Haynes book (actually it's based on her PhD thesis) is a very good book and it shouldn't take too much of your time.

Regarding the Legion of the Archangel Michael, a very good study is that of Armin Heinen http://openlibrary.org/b/OL2487160M/Legion_Erzengel_Michael_in_Ruma%CC%88nihttp://forum.axishistory.com/posting.php?mode=reply&f=4&t=158730&sid=693c4cd6e1b03f76a43f491eb218effcen it has been translated into Romanian. I am not sure there is an English version.

You might also find Zeev Sternhell's Birth of Fascist Ideology useful - it covers the social/ideological bases of fascism, and why it was distinct from nazism (which helps explains the frequent divergence between Germany and its allies)
