Hi!
Recently I've read, on Wikipedia, about a Croatian (NDH) govenment-in-exile... (at the bottom of the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government ... t_in_exile)

I've later know that was created by Pavelic and other on April 10th, 1951 (10° anniversary of fondation of NDH)
I think that was located in Spain, but in the '50s Pavelic and other were in Argentina, and later goes to Spain...
When ended this government-in-exile? in 1991? or in 1974-5? I supposed this date because the end of Fascist govenment in Spain o the creation of Federal Croatia...
I think that this government can continued to exists after the Death of the Poglavnik because Pavelic didn't have a "seat" in this government (think that he was to have the onorary title of Poglavnik), and because the other member dead later...

Anyone knoww other information?
Thanks!

Klaus,

After the war Dr. Ante Pavelic settled in Buenos Aires where he lived from 1948 to 1957. He formed the government in exile, like you said, on April 10 1951. But it was in Buenos Aires, Argentina and not Spain (he didn’t move to Spain until almost seven years later).

During this time, he was the active leader of the government in exile and remained politically active, publishing various statements, articles, and speeches that attacked the Yugoslav Communist regime for promoting Serbian hegemony.

During this period, the Ustasha movement went relatively dormant and experienced a bit of a crisis. Some old school ustashe felt that the movement needed a new leader to revitalize the group. Maks Luburic, a former high ranking Ustasha, went his own way and created the Croatian National Resistance (Hrvatski narodni otpor, or more simply known as Otpor) which existed from 1957 until it was dissolved in 1991 upon Croatia’s declaration of independence. Djafer beg Kulenovic served as the President of Pavelic’s Cabinet-in-exile until his death in Syria from an illness in 1956. Vjekoslav Vrancic, the NDH’s wartime minister of craftsmanship and trade, served as the vice president.

In 1956, Dr. Pavelic founded the Croatian Liberation Movement (HOP, Hrvatski oslobodilacki pokret), again in Buenos Aires. He headed this organization until his death in Spain in 1959. Upon his death, in his will he named Stjepan Hefer as his successor. However, again the movement was splintered as some members of the HOP leadership weren’t happy with the appointment. A new, Reformed Croatian Liberation Movement was created and led by Vrancic. When he died, in 1990, he was succeeded by Jakov Barbaric.

HOP, widely considered to be the most radical and fanatical Croatian nationalist organization, was organized into five main geographical divisions: South America, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. At the top of HOP was the Main Council, while the highest executive body was the Main Command. Below the Main Council there were the Department for Emigration and the Department for International Relations. These departments had seven offices and report services. HOP was a wide-ranging organization which also constituted a number of societies, branches, groups, and commissions. On October 9, 1991, HOP was officially registered as a political party in Zagreb, Croatia. Today, it publishes newspapers in Croatia, Argentina, Canada, Australia, and Germany. It also has a youth wing, and its total membership numbers about 650.

Finally, the Croatian National Council was another organization that sought to unite all the various Croatian emigrant nationalist parties (with the exception of the Croatian Peasant Party, aka the Hrvatska seljacka stranka and the previously mentioned HOP). A conference was organized and held in Chicago in 1973, and there various representatives decided to create a parliament that was organized in Toronto in 1974 and began meeting in 1975. Dinko Suljak was its first elected premier, and Bruno Busic was elected into the parliament and served there until his assassination by communist agents in 1978. The Council held its last parliament in 1990, whereupon it officially disbanded after the first democratic elections in Croatia.

Hope this answered your question.

Sincerely,
Ustasha Fanatic
