Cuffs on tunics and greatcoats?????

#1

Post by brigaf_fritz_witt » 19 Dec 2007, 03:24

Hi,
I was wondering about the cuffs on the Tunics and the greatcoats.....
I haven't seen the turned up cuff on the tunics or the greatcoats in officer pictures? Was there a regulation about the cuffs? Is it correct to have them turned up as many of the tunics and great coats come?
Thanks,
Fritz

Turned up cuffed, better known as French cuffs are generaly seen on officer's private purchase tunics. issued enlisted tunics had adjustable splint cuffs.

french cuffs were standard on issue and private purchase greatcoats but not surcoats.

"French Cuffs"?

#3

Post by brigaf_fritz_witt » 19 Dec 2007, 04:28

Thanks,
That helps. Is it okay to have the "French Cuffs" taken out, I mean is it authentic?
Here's a pic of my impression inspiration. On his tunic I don't see the French Cuffs. On pictures I have seen of Fritz in His greatcoat I don't recall the french cuffs either. Thatnks for the help. I want to be authentic and accurate.

Heer surcoats did have French cuffs. SS did not.

If you look close you can see what looks to be the the top edge of the French cuff right above his cufftitle.

Anyone else see it, or is my vision getting worse!!! :P

I looked through my book on the 12th SS HJ. The picture quality is better than that of the digital pics I have, and the cuffs are clearly visible. I am a bit confused about the surcoat/greatcoat cuffs. I have seen SS Generals and other officers that had Great coats with the cuffs. I know its a bit tit-for-tat, but I want to be as accurate as possible. Without starting a new topic as this pertains to Greatcoats, why is it that you almost never see a high-ranking SS officer in an M40 Greatcoat? It always seems to be the M36. Thanks for all your help,
Fritz

Then if you get into the whole field tunic vs dress, you'll find that many officers wore converted enlisted tunics in the field. That of course usually means no French cuffs, but a trend was to add bottle green "officer cut" collars. Sometimes they'd add french cuffs to. One thing I'm learning these days is that officers were notorious for gaffing off the regs and took certain artistic license with their tunics. If you are going for a dress uniform...go with French cuffs.

Funny thing, I've been looking into early W-SS officer uniforms and was pleasantly pleased to find this pic of Witt with SS1 tabs:

I forgot that Fritz led the Deutschland Regiment of the 1st SS then. Great work.
Thanks again,
Fritz

Turn back "French Cuffs" were used on the model 1914, and later on the model 1915 tunics in the first World War.

However, instead of French Cuffs, SS officer's field tunics were frequently badged-up standard issue "enlisted" tunics with split cuffs.

Heer officers likewise often used enlisted issue tunics with unaltered cuffs.

What model of greatcoat is this? I have abpost-war bundesmarine coat that besides colour and an oilcloth 'cape', is identical to this. Just sortof surprised me with the pocket design. Actually I hadn't seen that style ever before until I found the Bundesmarine coat.

Also what was the functional difference between a surcoat and a greatcoat?
Searching for Truppenfahrrad parts: Torpedo coaster brake parts, Union-werke headlight, truppenfahrrad handlebars, Torpedo front wheel hub.
