After a couple of failed experiments, I have removed my new paint again from my m42 shell.
It's completely stripped off now, and I think I'll just leave it that way because it still displays nicely.
I'm only wondering if the shell won't "deteriorate" faster that way, concerning rust and so.
Or can I safely keep it that way?
many thanks
Can I remove the paint from my helmet and keep it like that?

Here is some correct Helmet paint from 1944 Militaria. It is a quick drying spray and kind of hard to mess up. It worked very well for me

If you wish to display it in bare metal give it some sort of wax or clear lacquer coating to prevent rust. Ive actually heard that hairspray is a good rust preventative.

one you can try is mix some gun oil (gun oil has the best metal protection characteristics) with vaseline and put a very thin layer on your helmet (you shouldnt even be able to tell you put it on until you get close) this is by far the best way, and is an old tried and tested method in Oz for helmets and Bayonets

furniture wax, don't polish it up, just smear and let it dry
