Spearhead Helmet Review

#1

Post by Drew Maynard » 10 Apr 2009, 19:23

Gents:

There's been some speculation about the Spearhead helmets out there, so, here's one, in the flesh. A Nice m42 ordered from Barry.

My first thoughts, out of the box, were, in a pinch, this helmet was ready to go. Decent colour, nice shape. Although I'll put some late war texture on this, I was extremely pleased. For a starter or 'veteran' reenactor, this is a really nice solution.

I was happy with the shape, the steel dimensions, and overall quality of the edging as well. The liner fit the proper size (i'm a 58 liner size) and although the strap could do with an upgrade, if you're buying multiple shells for your impression or extras etc., this i still think is a great solution, out of the box.

Would I buy more? Absolutely, because finally the Spearhead liners and shells are available in a size 58, which seems to be what most of us are looking for.

I also like the two stampings, and the extra touch of the dome stamp inside.

I took some photos, comparing it to an original M42 from Grigsby. In the back, are original m35 shell and a m35 chinese shell (whitewash and black) from 'China Best' ebay seller, for comparison as well.

I think i'd give this helmet a 9/10, from Spearhead. Very happy with it and yes, good price as well, especially if you dont' want to mangle an original shell in the field.

Any other thoughts gents, or pics of your own spearhead m42s?

I have held a couple of these and I agree, they are sure to meet any standards. I think they are a little tiny bit lighter than the real thing but this is a very minor detail. Visually, there is no quick way to discern that this is not an original shell.

Looks good from here. How is the metal itself? Is it like the FJ helmets which ding easily?

I might look into getting one as an extra. Thanks for a brief review Drew!

Lovely review, Drew. Just 2 questions.

1. how is the leather in the liner? Soft, or thick?
2. As Gesetz said, how is the metal? Durable?

metal is pretty decent, i haven't gone nuts and put a caliper to that yet. decent weight, perhaps i'll ding it up. interior liner leather is on par with most liners, not super thick, but does the job. plaible at least and doesn't tend to bend or crack like other 'pleather' i've seen from asian helms.

can't compare it to the fj helms, i no longer have one.

yeah visually, pretty good, the vent hole is further back from the front liner rivet, but not in a hugely noticeable distance.

Glad to see another board member is pleased with the spearhead helms- I just ordered an m42 last week with the textured feldblau LW paint. I have never seen one up close (nor an original) so I'm stoked to see the pos review. Thanks for posting!

I will post pics of mine when it comes in.

Price on ebay was around 112 USD with shipping included.

Are the split pins flat or domed? Otherwise it seems like a very good repro and an affordable alternative to using refursbished shells which are becoming increasingly hard to find.

Drew, I hope you bring this to the next event, I'd like to take a closer look.

What sizes are available now liner wise. When these first came out I thought they were only available in one size. Do they come with a size 60 liner as I'd love one of hese for a late war impression.
