What kind of knife is this?
What kind of knife is this?
I saw a couple of these on ebay, when looking at k98 bayonets, most dont have this "guard" on the handle, though like the rest. I remember seeing ones just like it in the Pianist. They also seem to be a bit longer then ordinary K98 bayonets. Wish the ordinary k98 bayonets had these guards, would make it easier to grip and use, and not have your hand loose grip if you stab something, having your hand possibly slice against the blade D:

Re: What kind of knife is this?
The 98k bayonet was not designed to be used as a hand-held knife. I know of someone once who did and experiment with a pig carcass and a 98k bayonet both mounted on the rifle and dismounted I believe. It performs very well on the rifle, its intended use, and very poorly as a hand-held combat knife, or other hand-held uses. Do not get stupid and try to use it as a can opener while sitting cross-legged on the ground with the can between your legs.

Re: What kind of knife is this?
Its not actually a knife, its a bayonet ,an 1908 pattern 14/16 inch blade (I think)and to add to this out of the factory bayonets where not sharpened it actually had a butterknife like blade edge and a fairly sharp point, by all accounts rarely used as a hand weapon although it does make passible tent peg and yea, you could open cans with them .
Re: What kind of knife is this?
Thank you for reply, which bayonet would you say im better off with? This one or the ww2 style one :O , do many people use this knife in reenactment? ( id suppose not ). Ill probably just end up getting a ww2 one.GD,grenedier wrote:Its not actually a knife, its a bayonet ,an 1908 pattern 14/16 inch blade (I think)and to add to this out of the factory bayonets where not sharpened it actually had a butterknife like blade edge and a fairly sharp point, by all accounts rarely used as a hand weapon although it does make passible tent peg and yea, you could open cans with them .

Well, if you are going to develop a WWII German impression of someone armed with a 98k, then you need to get a 98k bayonet.

This is what i was talking about! its called a dress bayonet, sucks its sold on bunkermiltaria . Is there a difference between these and the other bayonets or why this is not as common? i am assuming these were only for parades etc, especially noting how shiny the blade is which would be more noticeable in combat.

Dadra,
As the name of the bayonet implies, it is for dress occasions only and was more of a ceremonial piece than anything. If you're interested soley in a reproduction bayonet, you can find one here:

Hello KS98 (Dress Walking out) bayonet was not meant to put on a rifle just a dress sidearm some originally came out with a piece of red or green felt plug in the rifle slot. Milled part of pommel too small to fit on K98K Mauser rifle. timothy
