Good news! It appears that FINALLY, the German authorities have recognized the historical significance of the Third Reich ruins on the Obersalzberg! All of them - not just the Eagle's Nest and the Documentation Center (which is mostly a modern construction anyway).
As part of the tenth anniversary of the Obersalzberg Documentation Center, there has been a lot of discussion in the media lately, as to why historical structures such as the Platterhof (Gen. Walker Hotel), the basements of the SS Kaserne, and the side wing of the Gutshof were torn down. There is ongoing discussion about including ALL the Obersalzberg Third Reich ruins under
Denkmalschutz (historic monument protection). There has been some very interesting background history on monument protection published, such as - in 1979 and 1985, the Bavarian Finance Ministry refused to include the Obersalzberg structures under historic protection, and struck those that were previously on the list (such as the Platterhof and Gutshof).
It's too late for the structures/ruins noted earlier (plus others, such as the Teehaus ruins), but perhaps this will save what's left of the Gutshof, the Berghof site, and other ruins around there.
Here are some of the online media articles. (If you don't read German, Google does a fairly adequate job of translation.)
