Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
FYI:
This is an interesting Novel that I happen to come across the other day. Interesting story of the Berghof and a boy who went to live there.

I have got the DVD "The devil makes three". In fact, the part of this 90 minutes film where we can see the Berghof is only 5 minutes in length.
Below are a few pictures from this part.

Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
Has the graffiti written on the Berghof ruins been documented in any comprehensive way? A book I am reading mentions a former Ukranian partisan writing a passage in Hebrew letters on the wall of the Berghof. I just curious if this is documented somewhere.
Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
I have found a partial answer to my second question in the book "Hitler at home" :allec wrote:My two questions are :
- - Does anyone know about the disappearing of the window ?
- What was the purpose of this extension (Destination of the new rooms, does anyone have a plan...) ?
"Hitler, however, did not seem to think the house was large or impressive enough. In 1939, he commissioned an expansion of the new wing that stretched it farther eastward and added a new bay window as well as a separate driveway and entrance for deliveries."
Unfortunatly, no plan of this expansion is provided.
The author indicates that the original information is from the German book "Adolf Hitler und der Obersalzberg: Eine Dokumentation in Wort und Bild" published by Josef Neul in 1997.

What a great site, Annelie! Quick question: one of the photos of the General Walker/Platterhof shows the Guest House/Documentation centre in the background. Anyone know what the US Army used it for when they were in occupation? It looks to be in pretty good nick.

Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
Hi Gary,
As far as I am aware, the US Army BRA/AFRC never used the Gästehaus, as it was in a ruined condition (mainly from plundering) and never set to rights again. At least from the 1970s-on, it was just a ruin with off-limits signs posted.

Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
Hi,
i'am back from my vacations at Berchtesgaden. I've had a beautiful time there with my family. And for the first time, i was there with Geoffs book.
At my last visit, i've missed to visit the "Bodnerbichl Hügel" as well as the Berghof sourroundings. With your book Geoff, it was easy to find all of the interesting stuff.
I visited also the viewpoint "Mooslahnerkopf" with the remainings of the Teehaus. There I was amazed at the construction workers and their tools. After a conversation with them, i could find out what they were doing there. They have just installed a protective fence for the stones and the rubble, which slips over or is thrown down. They also have some debris removed. I made some pictures of the fence, which was not yet finished. An a little Panorama from the Mooslahnerkopf.
I maybe show you later more pictures from the Berghof Area, but I need to sort first.

I suppose the bird house which is shown since Hitlers time
that someone always put up is no longer there?
Always wondered who did it and why?

Hi Annelie,
i have not seen a bird house. Was it on the left side, when you look in the direction of Salzburg? Attached to a tree?
I've checked my pics from 2013 too, and also found nothing.

Yes, There was always one there after the war from many many years.
Always wondered if it was the same person since it was always
in the same place.
Just figured there must be a story to it.

Re: Berghof Obersalzberg
Thanks for the info, Geoff. The guest house was certainly a mess when I first saw it in the late 1970s. I imagine that it was a ruin from 1945 onward. As for TunixO's comments on the new fence, long overdue IMO. I was amazed last year at how precipitous the climb to the site of the former Teehaus was.
