Erstmalig kann hier ein umfassender, systematischer und objektiver Gesamtüberblick über das künstlerische Schaffen in Deutschland zwischen 1933 und 1945 vorgelegt werden. Hunderte von Künstlern dieser Zeit wurden mit ihren Werken völlig vergessen, Ihre Arbeiten zerstört, beschlagnahmt oder als Nazikunst kollektiv verunglimpft.

Kann man tatsächlich von einer »nationalsozialistischen Kunst« sprechen? Gab es einen dem Nationalsozialismus eigentümlichen Kunststil oder ein ihn kennzeichnendes Kunstideal? Wer waren die Maler und Bildhauer, deren Kunstwerke auf den Ausstellungen und in den deutschen Museen zwischen 1933 und 1945 zu sehen waren? Welches war der Anteil der Politik und der Propaganda in der Themenauswahl und Stoffbehandlung? Dieses einmalige Werk gibt Antwort auf diese Fragen.

Seit Kriegsende haben sich erst wenige Schriften mit einer der merkwürdigsten Erscheinungen aus der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus befaßt: mit dem künstlerischen Schaffen im Dritten Reich. Inzwischen sind die Namen Arno Breker und Josef Thorak aus dem Bereich der Bildhauerei, Speer und Troost aus dem der Baukunst weltbekannt geworden. Dennoch wissen die wenigsten, daß neben den genannten Persönlichkeiten Hunderte anderer Künstler während jenes Zeitabschnittes viele Gemälde und Skulpturen schufen oder zu den größeren baukünstlerischen Vorhaben des Dritten Reiches beitrugen. Ferner ist es heute beinah unmöglich, diese Werke zu Gesicht zu bekommen; entweder wurden sie am Kriegsende zerstört, oder sie werden der Veröffentlichung vorenthalten. Dazu sagt der Herausgeber Davidson: »Entweder sind die in Deutschland zwischen 1933 und 1945 entstandenen Werke schön, und sie dürfen in diesem Fall nicht verborgen bleiben, oder sie sind häßlich, und ihre Ausstellung würde noch am ehesten dazu beitragen, daß sich jeder von ihrer Häßlichkeit überzeugen kann und sie nicht irrtümlich idealisiert.«

MORTIMER G. DAVIDSON, geb. 1922 in London. Soldat im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nach 1945 Mitglied der britischen Besatzungstruppe in Deutschland. Nach seiner Rückkehr im Jahre 1948 gründet er eine Gesellschaft für technisches Zeichen. Leitet später ein Elektrounternehmen. Lebt zur Zeit in den Niederlanden. Am Rande seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit interessiert er sich seit 30 Jahren für die mit der Kunst und der Kultur im Dritten Reich zusammenhängenden Fragen.

The author examines the design and construction details of the various buildings at the concentration camp but it's not a diatribe on Germans nor does he pass judgement and allows the reader to examine what remained of the complex after the War. It also involves problems and testimony given at the Nuremburg trials and how they related to the architecture, building documents and construction receipts. Fascinating

The Pressac book is a leading source but I do not think of it as a truly architectural book. It is more of a technical and industrial study -- maybe the best on the subject.

This is not splitting hairs, because architecture is the crossing of buildings' aesthetics and function. At one end of the field, architects design for users' appeal. At another end, they make statements for the world to see and for posterity to remember. Neither widely applied to death camp construction, especially for a genocide program placed behind security.

It may have been in Yitzhak Arad's study of the Operation Reinhard death camps, Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka, where a Nazi officer has the opinion that, instead of hiding their deeds, there should be great monuments to it. There was no such thing of course. But in an unthinkable historical chance, that is one place architecture would have been applied to genocide.

Pressac began as a Holocaust doubter and ended up one of its leading technical historians. Popular doubt is also well-covered in his book, which is heavy and oddly-shaped, about 30cm high and 45cm long -- probably the better for its large plans and diagrams. It won't stand up normally on a shelf so it has to lie flat. The on-line files say that print copies have reportedly priced at a thousand dollars but I cannot imagine that, having seen it for about $30.

I found Matthias Donath's "Architecture in Berlin 1933-1945" (Lukas Verlag 2006) very useful. It's also published in German.

Does anyone know of any book on Reich architecture in terms of residental structures? As a hobby I am a student of residential architecture or private dwellings, but I know of no books on this subject, and only very few from the original period.

Hi Axmann,

I don't know of any books that cover residential construction exclusively, but the following period books have sections or entries on private houses and apartment buildings (the first one more than the other). If you can find any issues of the architectural magazine "Moderne Bauformen," they usually had articles on residential architecture.

Well, to each his own, but I had to tune his commentary out after a very short time. The sites he visits are interesting, but I quickly grew tired of his non-stop vitriolic diatribe. Yes, we know that Hitler and the Nazis were evil, but I've rarely seen such a bitter partisan rant. If his program was supposed to be informative about Third Reich architecture or sites, he failed - it's actually a very biased history lesson from someone with an axe to grind. Who is this Jonathan Meades, anyway?
