Hotel Adlon

Postby sandmountainslim on 30 Apr 2009 02:07

Anyone have any good photos of the Adlon Hotel?
I think it is interesting that after the main building burned the DDR opened the surviving wing of the building as their version of the hotel complete with bellhop uniforms etc from the original.
Some pics of the hotel during WWII would be cool as would any photos of the building during it's DDR days or pics of the newly rebuilt hotel, if anyone else finds this structure interesting.

Here's the Adlon in circa 1972 (Or their version), looking at the front, ie towards the west, Brandenburg Gate to the right when viewed from the front. We actually called in for a nice cold lager! not very impressive

Edit we were actually served by a bell hop!, the place had seen better days

regards

To give some perspective, the attached shows the rear of the annexe and it's relation to the berlin Wall, source unknown unfortunately

Excellent!
Thanks for all the photos.
I can imagine a stay in the hotel in the early 70's WOULD have been a unique experience.
I wish the DDR authorities would have left the surviving wing standing so that it could have been incorporated into the rebuilt building.

It's amazing that every single building on Pariser Platz was torn down, except for the Brandenburg Gate. There were some pretty famous buildings on PP pre-war, including Max Liebermann Haus and the old US Embassy. In that picture above, it's basically a a parking lot.

Here a period postcard of the hotel.

When we were there in 2010 to have some coffee, the entrance was refused because they did not like my trousers. I guess you should wear a suit to get in.
