The state of Kentucky and the National Park Service decided to do a big celebration of Lincoln's birth in February 2011, to coincide with the beginning of the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States (as we call it, where I'm from :milwink: . A huge crowd was expected at his birth site, along with massive security, but the weather was so bad (cold) that not much came of the event. Anyway, this was a particular one-time event. Lincoln's birth site can be crowded on nice summer days - not huge crowds or anything - but it is a popular place to visit.

I have been in Braunau on 20 April in a non-anniversary year, and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I have been at the Feldherrnhalle on 9 November, and I saw nothing out of the ordinary except two Polizei standing on the steps, off to the side. They did not stop me (or anyone else) from climbing the steps and standing where the Mahnmal was. I have stood on top of the buried Führerbunker in Berlin on 30 April, and there was nothing out of the norm there, just a few other history tourists. (I was not there to memorialize anybody or anything - just for the historical connection with the date - just like I visit WBTS battlefields in the USA on the battle anniversaries.) In fact, the only site I've ever heard of that neonazis gather because of its association with a Third Reich personage was Hess' grave in Wunsiedel. It will be interesting to see if they still go there, since the grave and maker were removed last year.

They call it The War of Northern Aggression down here, where I'm from..... :D

But, my dad is from Ohio, and my mom's from Georgia, so I just call it "The Civil War"!

In fact, the only site I've ever heard of that neonazis gather because of its association with a Third Reich personage was Hess' grave in Wunsiedel
I was in Munich several years ago on the anniversary of Hess' birth. Our small group had planned to meet at the Hofbrauhaus at around 18:00 but one of our party was late. He finally arrived about :30 late and told us that he had been held up by a massive crowd in the Marienplatz. Apparently, there was a group of neo-nazis, waving gedenknis signs and attempting to come up to the Marienplatz from the U-bahn station, but a much, much larger crowd blocked them from coming up the stairs. He asked a local policeman what was up and was told that it was April 26th and the anniversary of Rudolf Hess' birth.

Speaking of AH's homes, does his childhood home in Leonding/Linz still exist?

The houses and apartments that Hitler lived in during his childhood, including Braunau, Hafeld, Lambach (x2), Leonding, Linz, and Linz-Urfahr, all still exist. Only the building in Passau where the family lived from 1893-94, no longer exists.

Rob,

I have not seen a grave marker for Edmund ... Has anyone else?

Here are some then-and-now pics of other Hitler childhood residences (leaving out the well-known Leonding house and the boarding schools).

The Hitler family lived in an apartment at Kapuzinerstraße 31 in Passau during the years 1893-94. (No "now" pic of this one, as the building no longer exists.)

In 1895 Alois Hitler retired from the customs service and bought this country farm called the "Rauschergut" in the small village of Hafeld, some 35 kilometers southwest of Linz.

Adolf Hitler first attended school in the nearby village of Fischlham, starting on May 1, 1895. The school building still exists.

Hitler visited his old school in the summer of 1938, following the Anschluß with Austria. This visit was filmed by Eva Braun and photographed by Heinrich Hoffmann.

Farming proved too much for the retired Alois, and the Hitler family moved into town, living above this guesthouse on the main street in Lambach in 1897. The address then (and now) was Marktplatz 58, and the building remains practically unchanged, as the Gasthof Leingartner. During the Nazi era, the main square was named Adolf-Hitler-Platz.

Later in 1897 the Hitler family moved to Schmiedmühle 86 in Lambach, and lived there until 1898.

In 1899 the Hitler family moved to the well-known house in Leonding, a suburb of Linz (address is Michaelsbergstraße 16).

Following his father's death in 1903, Adolf was sent to boarding school in Steyr. When he returned in 1905, his family lived in an apartment in this building at Humboldtstraße 31 in Linz.

In 1907 the family moved across the river to Linz-Urfahr, where Hitler's mother Klara died in this building at Blütenstraße 9 on December 21, 1907.

After his mother's death, Hitler left for Vienna and his long road to becoming the leader of Germany.
