german radio 1933-1945

Post by harry6116 » 21 Mar 2014, 04:13

Hello all, could anyone please give me a general overview of what German radio was like from the years 1933 to 1945. I have not heard a lot of German broadcasts from this time period. I do have around 100 speeches but not much else. I'm just interested to know what the German listener would hear daily on the radio.
This is one area where you tube has failed me. I did hear a recording of the radio air raid announcement with the ominous ticking noise. plus sounds of bombs falling from March 1945

any help would be fantastic
thanks

Michael

If I recall correctly, the Ministry of Propaganda had called for the manufacture of cheap radios called Volksempfanger or "People's Radio, which cost 35 or 72 Reichmarks (or maybe more or less like that) depending on the size, I was able to see a programme from 1936 thru wikipedia. Programs vary depending on the Reichssender, or local broadcasting center/transmission area. National programs are transmitted thru the Deutschlandsender.

I would like to listen to historical broadcast as far as NS-era radios are concerned, but can't find any.

This is the programme I mentioned moment ago, radio broadcast for Feb 28, 1936 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Reich ... eb1936.jpg

Cheers,

Forgot to say that since I don't speak German, but I can figure out some of the programs on radio consist of news, choral singing/music by the Leibstandarte, speeches perhaps by politicians of the day, and popular music. :)

Great info thanks.
i did love the german theme that was played before major announcements.
I do have several army communiqués that were read over the radio.
I wonder if the Germans had variety shows like the Americans?

This site has a typical weekly schedule of Berlin Television programs for March, 1939 for those few lucky people with the capability of watching them. I imagine the content of radio programming was pretty similar at that time though of course there was much more of it:
