Decision on Hitler's Braunau Birthplace
Re: Decision on Hitler's Braunau Birthplace
GoeringsPetLion,
I have a favor to ask. Could you translate this into English: "Einzig der Feige läßt - Von heir gen Rechten."
It appears to be poetic and makes no sense to me. Maybe you can help.
Thanks,
James

Einzig der Feige läßt von heil’gen Rechten. -> Only the coward stays away from sacred rights.JLEES wrote:"Einzig der Feige läßt - Von heir gen Rechten."

Great! Many thanks. I tried translating that myself, but my German is not that good.
Thanks,

It is indeed a beautiful place but there's lots of more beautiful places in Austria.JLEES wrote:Yes, I also thought Braunau was a wonderful little Austrian town, but, in terms of tourism, there is much bigger draws in the area that would suck the oxygen way from it. The "Hitler tourism" or histroic tuorism would only enhanse what the town already has to offer.
This is what Braunau could offer without "Hitler tourism" on a hot summer day :
You can dip yourself in Inn if it's too hot... This was very welcome amusement for one local.
"Ist es nicht kalt?" - "Nein, Ich bin aus Finnland"
You can also feed birds on the same spot near the bridge... You can relax with beer in the sunset...
Back in 2007 I was looking for the building and everyone on the square knew what we (two travelers with backpacks) were looking for.JLEES wrote:Yes, this decision seems to be very counterproductive. When my family visited Braunau in 2000, we looked over the town's church, eat a meal at a nearby restaurant and my wife actually did some shopping along the main square, before I could locate Hitler's birthplace. I did it through visual recognition of the building and upon discovering its location, then noticed a small historical marker in front of it. Beyond my family there wasn't a sole in Braunau who knew why I was there. For obvious reasons I didn't advertise why I was there.
No need to advertise.
It's easy to find if you just walk from the bridge straight through the town square, town people apparently don't want to help finding it.
They serve excellent food and beer there but I wouldn't go there just to eat and drink, so "Hitler tourism" in historical sense is anyway good for the town.
"Pilgrimages" made by unwelcome individuals and groups could be stopped on the bridge between Braunau and Simbach.

OK. Now there is someone provoking the locals with his Hitler impersonation. Not good.
"Austrian authorities are investigating reports of a man appearing in public in Adolf Hitler's birthplace as the Nazi dictator's double, including the distinctive mustache, haircut and clothing."

Re: Decision on Hitler's Braunau Birthplace
The irony is that this particular building was never owned by the Hitler family, nor was it their permanent dwelling place. Alois Hitler was just renting an apartment in the building while he was temporarily posted to Braunau on the German-Austrian border. It is really just a historical accident that Hitler happened to have been born in that particular building.
Hitler's ties to Linz were far more substantial than those to Braunau, but so far as I know no fuss has been made about the house in the centre of the city where the Hitler family lived for a number years.

Re: Decision on Hitler's Braunau Birthplace
It is not the ties or the number of years that count Michael, it is the fact that he was born here. That makes the building historical.

It could be the next target if this goes on.michael mills wrote: Hitler's ties to Linz were far more substantial than those to Braunau, but so far as I know no fuss has been made about the house in the centre of the city where the Hitler family lived for a number years.

Plans to turn the Braunau birth house into an Austrian police station (paralleling the Bavaria police station in Hitler's Munich apartment).

This would be much better then destroying it.Geoff Walden wrote: ↑20 Nov 2019, 03:21Plans to turn the Braunau birth house into an Austrian police station (paralleling the Bavaria police station in Hitler's Munich apartment).

BTW: Dear Geoff, did you get my mails?
Re: Decision on Hitler's Braunau Birthplace
in my point of view a museum /information centre would be a better decision.
But a public use (police station) is a good solution at all.

The current plans will radically change the appearance of the Braunau birth house. I guess Denkmalschutz (monument protection) doesn't work in Austria either.
