Frühmorgens singt die Amsel

Frühmorgens singt die Amsel,
frühmorgens singt der Star
die schönsten Liebeslieder,
im Frühling Jahr für Jahr.
Und wenn wir so marschieren,
an Bäumen querfeldein,
begleiten uns die Lieder
der kleinen Vögelein.

Und plötzlich ruft der Unteroffizier:
Singen!

Heidemarie,
wenn wir am Rhein marschieren.
Heidemarie,
wenn wir den Wein probieren,
dann wünsch ich mir dazu,
und der Kompanie,
eine die küßt wie du,
ja, eine Heidemarie.

The Blackbird Sings In the Early Morning

The blackbird sings in the early morning.
The starling sings in the early morning
the most beautiful songs of love,
In the spring, year after year.
And so, when we are marching
Across the field to the trees
The song of the little birds
Accompanies us.

And suddenly the NCO calls out:
SING! Three, four, yes, yes,yes,
Dear maiden, lovely child,
You, you, you,
Indeed you do not know how faithful we are.
You, you, you, because we are indeed soldiers
And not heartbreakers.
l: We love only one maiden
and that is you alone l:

On a Sunday morning,
As we are marching through the countryside,
By a garden wall,
Stands a little maiden.
She had picked red roses
With which to greet me.
And it was as if I myself were
Pressed firmly to her heart.
And suddenly the NCO calls out:...

Heidemarie,
When we are marching by the Rhine,
Heidemarie
When we are tasting the wine,
Then I wish for myself,
And the company,
Someone who kisses like you,
Yes, a Heidemarie.

Poetic license taken here and there, of course. :D

I used the name, "Heidemarie" without translating it. I like the sound of it.
It could be translated as Mary of the Moor, Mary of the Meadow or Mary of the Heath but I still prefer saying simply, "Heidemarie."
