Fantastic! A very good work! How have you filmed from the air? Have you started a helicopter?
Many Greetings!

Hi there!
Geoff Walden had sent me some of his copies of the JIOA Commission about the Berghof.
In the meanwhile I was lucky to get the original three books for some months. So I could offer to make a 1200 dpi Scan of the map.

Thanks, my friend! I thought I saw all of this US Army film before, but I didn't see the part with the guy carrying the stool, or the Nebelfass.

At about 2:00, you can see what was left of that little wooden hut back up behind the Adjutancy wing, that we have discussed here before. It looks like it was reduced to just kindling. :milwink:

I'm still perplexed about the state of the Unterwurflehen house in May 1945, where your buddy "Spann/Spahn" lived. In most views, like this film, it looks like it was heavily damaged by the bombing. But in other photos it looks much more intact ... I don't know why the difference.

Hope you have a great time at the Wiesn!

Hi Max,

They used to sell these films as VHS tapes at the Kehlsteinhaus and the Hintereck Cafe gift shops. The tunnels in Part 2 are all gone now - either dug out or filled in and made completely inaccessible. These tunnels were last accessible in the spring/summer of 2001, when the authorities were digging out the basements of the SS Kaserne buildings, including the underground rifle range.

Hi Geoff,

i haven't found it yet. I have so many maps in my head, I think I've only dreamed of this one.

But I keep looking.

That would be great. I'm definitely interested.

Haha... all this Wiesn (Oktoberfest) talk. Sunday I'm there too, so maybe we can meet. ;)
Because of this, episode 9 of Obersalzberg Now & Then will be postponed until next week. Sorry, guys. :P

Again while searching for an different topic in a book I found something I never
paid attention to previously.

He Was My Chief by Christa Schroeder

page 50.......

he did not like horses and hated snow (especially after winter 1941)
and sunshine made him feel bad. He did not like the sun and had bought the Berghof precisely because it
was situated on the north side of the Obersalzberg. the house was in shadow all day, and the thick walls
made sure no warmth got through from the outside. Even in the summer it was unusually cool, and cold when it
rained. Hitler loved this cold,

Not sure what to make of this other than he rented in 1928 then purchased in 1933..don't think I ever read
why he liked this particular spot.

Max Hartmann wrote the same in his Book:
Page 10 (german version)
"Hitler hatte das Haus Wachenfeld aber gerade deswegen gekauft, weil es auf der Nordseite des Berges lag. Er liebte direktes Sonnenlicht nicht, er war ein Nachtmensch. Der Berghof lag meist im Schatten, so dass es auch im Sommer immer schön kühl blieb."

Now & Then - Episode 9: Kaserne

[on-topic OFF]
Well.. the Wiesn (Oktoberfest) was great! For the first time and I already know I will go back next year. Awesome party!
[on-topic ON]

Good news: the next episode of Now & Then has been released by Ruiter Productions. Let us just fly over the former SS Barracks (Kaserne) and see how they would look in modern environment. I have to say it was a hard job and I tried to fit everything as good as possible. But since nothing is there anymore, I sometimes had to make a best guest. But still a great episode again!
