Two books arrived a few days ago. One for my collection and one was ordered for local library. Amazing reading, but 10 years too late :-(

Hi All

First time post here, thanks for such a wonderful forum. I have a deep interest in WW2 from the german side and am spending alot of time now perusing the site.

This part fascinates me the most though, Hitler's Berghof and the surrounding area. looking thru this post i am trying discern if the rooms from the berghof basement are actually still intact and accessible thru the old tunnel systems? which is why they are sealed?

does anyone know if that is the case? Was just thinking about that as i was studying some about the bunker in berlin

thanks so much

Hi headwest, welcome!
:welcome:

Some of the Berghof basement rooms are indeed still intact, while others were collapsed during the bombing. But none are accessible today, as the ways in have been buried under rubble. The basement had no connection with the tunnel system, so there would be no way into the tunnels if one found one's way into the basement rooms today.

Hi Geoff

Thanks so much for the info! i just bought your book as well! and i have been to your website many many times

I actually talked to you years ago when i had some questions and you were very nice to answer and help me!

anyway, great site, thanks for the info

if i may, a couple other follow up questions about the berghof area

1) what was the last date Hitler was at the berghof?

2) are there any pics from in between the bombing date and when the berghof was fired by the SS? I have read here there was not alot of damage and was curious what i might have looked like

thanks much

This is not the Berghof but still a good FYI:

Hitler's original home in Austria to be a museum

Hitler's home set to become House of Responsibility museum dedicated to his crimes

Austria authorities have decided to turn Adolf Hitler's home, located in the upper-Austrian town of Braunau am Inn, into a museum called as "House of Responsibility", which would be dedicated to his crimes against humanity committed during the Third Reich. The two-storey "Hitler house" is in the centre of Braunau am Inn on Austria's border with Germany. It has been empty for the past two years, but politicians have argued bitterly about its fate for decades. Critics insisted that demolition was the only way of dispelling the stigma attached to the building.

Signed Adolf Hitler photo, discovered in the ruins of fuehrerbunker, to be sold in Cheshire

A signed photo of Adolf Hitler "discovered in the ruins" of his bunker in Berlin after his death is to be auctioned in Cheshire. The framed picture belonged to war reporter William Forrest, who witnessed the Normandy landings and the crossing of the Rhine during World War Two. The photo was taken in 1925, a year after Hitler was sentenced to five years in Landsberg prison for treason for attempting a coup in Munich, and eight years before he became chancellor of Germany.

This has nothing to do with the Berghof. I thought it would just be nice to share this with my Forum friends.

Since this thread deals with a lot of before and after it would be nice to show a great presentation of (European Theater) WWII 1944 sites before and after. But this is unique since the top image fades away reveiling the original image as the exact spot appeared on D-Day.

This is remarkable how this was done. You are in 1944 Europe—WWII then by moving your mouse from left to right, you are in the present.

These photos are amazing. A lot of work went into revisiting these exact locations and aligning the camera to take the same photo 70 years later.

LEFT CLICK .. HOLD IT AND DRAG YOUR MOUSE GENTLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ON THE ORIGINAL PHOTO AND THE PICTURE WILL fade and become the exact same location of today

Drag back over and your are back in 1944 again;
scroll down to next picture and repeat.

Haven't looked at them all but that is pretty neat.

I was at google street maps yesterday in Charlottenburg Berlin
and I was thinking that it was too bad that they didn't do this exactly
the same there. So much in fact the whole city would be interesting to see
after/before.

I was looking for addresses family used to live at but obviously nothing is the
same.

Very nice pictures Annelie! I have never seen many of them.

A little bit offtopic. I was in my vacation at the NS-Ordensburg Vogelsang in the Eifel. Here is a photo of the sports field and the Thingstätte. In the middle is still the athlete relief. A very interesting place. More photos will soon be seen on my page.
