This is just an FYI for my Forum friends...
This is a great site on the net for anything related to WWII and of course the "OBERSALZBERG" too

Is it OK to post images from Harry von Gebhardt's collection?

In case it's not, here is a link to a photo [no 88] of a truck near the stair case [for all you turning circle deniers]
I suppose the driver might have backed it up; but I think not.[see also no 196]
And tell me that they backed the tractor and trailer up in no 329.

Notice also that the great window is partially lowered in no 88 and fully lowered in no 200

Forgive me, but are you suggesting that a truck driver would be incapable of backing up the driveway to the Berghof? Perhaps you don't realize this, but that's kinda what truck drivers do. They don't just drive forward.

Of course the truck driver would have been capable of backing up the driveway ; just as were the drivers of the Grossers.
I am saying that they didn't have to because there was room for them to turn at the top.
I would not be surprised to hear that there was an informal competition amongst drivers to see who could make the turn in the most elegant way [that's kinda what drivers do  ]
These guys [chauffeurs - what's the German?] had lots of time on their hands waiting around and no doubt would have amused themselves with such challenges.
As I have stated before; it beggars belief that the residence of the national leader could not accommodate such a simple thing as a turning circle in a convenient place.

Hello Max,

Actually I you see the top of the driveway you will notice there isn't that much room for
turning around....or if they do its extremely tight and considering the numbers of vehicles
that came and went there I wondered just how they did it?

Air ventilations things? Sorry, am not technical.

Hi Annelie,

At least one of those objects was a fire hydrant ... probably the other one as well (or some associated part of the water system).

You're right - that's the Berghof driveway, with Bormann's Tree in the background.

Just got back from Obersalzberg and Nürnberg. I have shot very good film material for some brand new Now & Then's of the Obersalzberg, so just stay tuned. Later on a huge serie about Nürnberg will follow.

For now just a quick photo for fun of the new stairs at the Platterhof, because I remembered this when I saw this ugly creation.

Hmm on that staircase, how new is it?

By the way, loved the last series of drive photos.

Half way through Misch's book; and on Geoff's right after.

Geoff I believe you are going to enjoy Misch's book as it goes into some good stuff concerning the Berghof.

The wide path at the side of the garage appears to lead to a large open area behind the garage.
Perhaps this is where the vehicles turned.
Granted that traffic would have been only one way at a time.
This area was originally intended to be a garden according to the plans, but necessity might changed them.

I remember for years people use to laugh at Hitler (having a love for architecture) building his house over a garage.
But in reality he did not do that. A little research goes a long way to discredit a critic. This is a great thread.

I was going to post the same hypothesis as Max re the turning area beyond the garage until I realised that the previous photo of Hitler(?) walking past the garage suggests that the path isn't wide enough. But perhaps the drivers could drive through the garage into the turning space? It just occurred to me that if the garage had a rear door, perhaps the drivers could have driven through the garage into the turning circle. I have actually been inside the garage – and I think I have posted photos of that somewhere on this thread – but to my eternal discredit I cannot remember whether there was a (silted up) rear door. I do remember squeezing in on hands and knees through a small aperture at the top right-hand corner of the main garage door.

Its a shame we never thought to ask Rochus Misch since he was the last person
I believe who would have first hand knowledge on this topic.

Found another photos after the bombing that used to be on the axis forum
just to give another perspective.

I was inside the garage in 1970 and there was no rear door—or, (if there ever was) there was no evidence of it at that time.
