Stian,

My interest in Latvians grew because of an Latvian friend. I learned a lot from these forums and
from Arthur Silgailis book....http://www.abebooks.com/LATVIAN-LEGION- ... 1406136/bd
I came to admire Arthus Silgailis.

Uli,
Was my understanding all those involved in building projects in and around Berchtesgaden where paid labour?

Hello Annely,

paid yes, but they got not much money for their hard work. Everyonce in a while they have lectures up in the obersalzberg documentation centre. November 2013 and february 2014 they had very interesting lectures about the slave work system in the third reich (only in german unfortunatelly: http://www.obersalzberg.de/archiv_sonde ... .html?&L=0). In 1944 about one third off all work in the third reich was done by slave workers. A long time it was not clear, if also on the obersalzberg this kind of work was usual. But it was. Not only more or less well paid german and italian workers were there, but also czech and other east european workers were forced to work there. I personally heard also, that the tunnel down in the city of berchtesgaden, and we have 6 quite large ones there, had been build by women from ukraine amongst others. We had this tour in 2005 to one of these tunnels and an old native woman said, that these poor women all sleept in a big room of the still existing gasthaus neuhaus in the city of berchtesgaden. The people nowadays are not aware of this part of our history down here. First step is as offen to make things clear and visible. This forum is a real great place for this purpose. I am very thankful for that.

Uli

Thankyou Uli for your reply.

Never heard about the tunnel down in the city of Berchtesgaden unless you mean the air raid shelter?
There is so much still I don't know about Berchtesgaden and Obersalzberg that I am still interested to
learn about.

Annelie

ps. I have only been there three times so far :-)

Annelie,

yes there are 6 of them in my town. Some more have been built around the valley, for some of them building has just started in the end of the war. Geoff Walden has nice pictures on his website of most of them, even some taken from within. The Capacity of those was for around 30000 people, a greater number as the residents (and slave workers) were at that time. Some of my friends here used to play in those when they were kids, because they were still left open quite some time after the war. I am just trying to get into one of them legally, because i know somebody that knows the person with a key to the iron door .....

I can recommend to you Annelie that book. There is almost everything about tunnels, around and directly, in Berchtesgaden.

That link to the 360 degree photo is awesome Annelie, and was new to me.
Have enjoyed playing around with it.

Thanks for the link, Annelie!

Some of the comments ... well, personally, I never found the Tuerken to be spooky, but I guess others have thought this as well. It always just seemed like "home" to me. (Yes, that "seemed" is in the past tense.)

My only comment - that's not the Tuerken at 3:34 ... don't know what it is, but not the Tuerken.

Why do you say "seemed" Geoff?

I'll just say this, and leave it at that. My stays at the Tuerken since Frau Ingrid Scharfenberg pased away have not felt very "homelike."
