it has been decided that there will be no casino in the Berchtesgaden train station (Bahnhof), which is now privately owned.

Has Berchtesgaden gone mad? Privately owned train station and even the idea of putting casino there is
unconscionable. Just hope this area will not go the way of the world and get money hungry.

Indeed, don't we wish we could buy the Dietrich Eckart Krankenhaus? Or could have bought the Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel to save it? Well anyway, it appears that the people who bought Speer's house do appreciate the history.

Hi Alain,

That's the side wing of the Türken, where today's garage and apartment are. This photo was before this wing was connected to the main building. Well, it was never really "connected" - it's not connected today either - but I mean, before the main building was extended over to right beside the side building. The side building is a little different today as well.

This fits into three threads here (also Munich and Berlin), but I'll choose the Obersalzberg. :milwink:

Has anyone seen this book?

Is there anything really new in it? That is, anything that would be new to many readers of this thread? Photos?

I just returned from a short visit to Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg. Here are a few "news" updates.

The Bahnhof in Berchtesgaden continues to get a facelift. Some sort of business was in the process of relocating to Hitler's private lobby section, where a travel agency used to have its office, but had been closed for several years. Repair work continues on the roof and upper floors.

The former Dietrich Eckart Krankenhaus and Hotel Geiger are still there, but both continue to deteriorate.

[added on 27 Oct] The Holzkäfer restaurant in Buchenhoehe has reopened. But it is under new management and it was a big disappointment. Except for the interior décor, there is no resemblance to the old restaurant that was a local favorite. A shame!

In the Platterhof/Gaestehaus tunnel beneath the Dokumentation Obersalzberg display, parts of the tunnel system that used to be open are now closed off with plastic sheeting, including the room with the remains of the ventilation machinery, and one end of the large unfinished tunnel at the entry, which would have contained machinegun positions and a gas lock. I don't know why these portions are closed off now.

Dear Johnnyrocket,
The colour posters of the Berghof - any idea where I can buy some larger versions?
And who would I credit if I wanted to use them in a book I'm planning?

Hi J.P.,

Welcome to AHF!
:welcome:

There were two bee houses on the Obersalzberg. The lower Bienenhaus was about 500 meters to the west of the Gutshof complex. The ruins are located in the woods today in an area called Teugelsbrunnenbach.

I believe there are architectural plans for the 1938 additions to the Berghof, in archives in Munich, but I have not seen them myself.

Hope this helps,

Geoff

Hi

When Hitler would visit the Berghof, I am curious how he traveled there? if he flew from say Berlin, what airport did he fly into and then what roads were taken from there to Berchtesgaden.

From there what road did he take to the Berghof itself

are these places and roads still there?

thanks

Sometimes he went by auto, sometimes by train, and sometimes by plane. In the early days before the Autobahn between Munich and Salzburg, he traveled from Munich past the north side of the Chiemsee lake - he would often stop at the Lambacher Hof on the lake shore. Later, he traveled by the Autobahn which is now A8. When taking his train, he traveled directly to the Berchtesgaden station, and was then driven up the main road to the Obersalzberg, which is now B319. By plane, he flew to the military airfield at Ainring, just across the border from Salzburg, and was driven from there on what is now B20, through Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden, then on up to the Obersalzberg on what is now B319.

All of these places and roads are still there, except there is no longer an airport at Ainring (some of the buildings remain).

Thanks Geoff!

I am also curious, when they would take a day and go to the Konigssee, what roads would they take to get there?

i am just trying to google earth these locations and get an idea on how and where travel might have taken place between sites there
