Postby JLEES on 21 Jul 2004 13:35

Hello,
Does anyone know the name of the actor who played the title role of Quex in the 1933 UFA film called Hitler Youth Quex? Did he do on to other roles?

Quex

Postby Helly Angel on 21 Jul 2004 14:01

Hitlerjunge Quex, German feature film (1933) directed by Hans Steinhoff, based on the novel of the same name by Karl A. Schenzinger; with Heinrich George, Berta Drews and Claus Clausen. The film rated "artistically outstanding" had its premiere in Munich on September 16, 1933 (with Hitler present). The propagandistic intent of the film was to capture German youth for the National Socialism movement.

Hitlerjunge Quex

Postby JLEES on 21 Jul 2004 15:09

Helly,
Thanks for the great information. Did Heinrich George play the lead role in Hitlerjunge Quex? Was he the young Hitler Youth member that was murdered at the end?

No friend, he was Vater volke.

Quex the HJ died at the end was Jürgen Ohlsen (Heini Volker). Look here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024127/

Jürgen Ohlsen:

Date of birth: 15 March 1917 in Berlin-Schöneberg, Germany
Date of death: 23 September 1994 in Düsseldorf, Germany. (natural cause)

His filmography:

Wunder des Fliegens: Der Film eines deutschen Fliegers (1935)
... aka Miracle of Flight (1935) (USA: video box title)... with Ernst Udet!

Hitlerjunge Quex: Ein Film vom Opfergeist der deutschen Jugend (1933) .... Heini Völker

The Movie

Postby JLEES on 21 Jul 2004 17:45

Helly,
Thanks again for the kind information. But, if I understand this correctly, the 16-year old actor Jürgen Ohlsen, who played the role of Heini Völker, son of communist parents and member of the HJ died at the end of the film. Is this correct?

That is correct.

I have the film in VHS and is really bored... terrible!!!

Is based in the life of Herbert Norkus, a HJ died in 193o or 1931 I think. It was a bad film in Germany and Göbbels get this and stop the films with the history of the party.

I have too "SA Man Brand", I prefer this films. Is not funny but is better than Quex.

All the best,

PD: Yes Ohlsen is the HJ died in the film.

Regarding a detail about Quex: Was this nickname actually used about Herbert Norkus, or was it invented in the book and later film about "Heini Völker"?

I just watched this film, and did some on line follow up looking for additional info. I did read that the real Norkus was nicknamed "Quex", but don't know how true that is.

While on the topic of Quex, does anyone know what became of the actor, Jürgen Ohlson for the remainder of the war? I know he made 2 other films (1933-Alle machen mit" and 1935-"Wunder des Fliegens") but that's it, other than passing away in 1994. Was he a member of the real HJ or armed services? I'm guessing the answer if yes to both, but found no info to back that up.

Thanks in advance

The most entertaining film about the Nazi "kampfzeit" years was an early NS film titled "Hans Westmar", which was based on the life of Horst Wessel. Goebbels also hated this film (mostly because he hated Putzi Hanfstaengl, who had a lot to do with the film's production and music). Overall, I found the film most interesting, especially since the plot has an American twist. The movie was shot in a documentary style and is most robust in the street fighting / beerhall battle scenes. "Hitlerjunge Quex", "SA Mann Brand", and "Hans Westmar" constitute the "big three" of these early Nazi films in most film studies of the period.

Slightly off target, but one of my favorites is "Junge Adler", the first film with Eberhardt Krüger (Hardy Kruger) in it. It's about an aviation apprentice at what is obviously the Heinkel Rostock plant. Great musical score, and if you look closely you'll see a He-177 prototype behind that row of starting He-111.
