Hitler's Bunker.

I have two plans of Hitler's Bunker and they differ quite a bit. Does anyone have an accurate plan please? Was the staircase joining the upper and lower bunkers spiral? Speer didn't design it so who did? Who built it? Many thanks... Rob.

By the way, "Hochtief" (a building society) was in charge of building Hitler's bunkers

Regarding that map showing where the Fueherbunker was/is ... I have to differ some with this interpretation. The exact location of the Fuehrerbunker is easy to pinpoint on the ground today, by overlaying or correlating 1945 aerial photos with modern aerial photos. I bought copies of both at a kiosk near Potsdamer Platz a few years ago. You can line up the streets and also existing buildings like the Air Ministry, then look for the bunker emergency exit and watch/ventilation towers, and just transfer the location to the modern photo or map.

The Fuehrerbunker site is closer to Wilhelmstrasse, and further north (behind the Old Chancellery). It is behind the modern Wilhelmstrasse 90-92 apartment building, beneath a grassy area and parking lot, at the end of the street called In der Ministergarten.

I believe this map is a closer match to the site (Fuehrerbunker site in red). I would suggest the bunker outline shown on the other map is closer to the so-called Fahrerbunker (SS Drivers Bunker), which was discovered about 1991.

As for the spiral staircase... I think I have read/been told/seen somewhere (I wish I could remember the source off the top of my head) that the staircase was just a staircase, but the landing was curved instead of square, thereby allowing people to mistake a staircase with a landing for a spiral staircase. When I find the source I'll post it.

Geoff Walden is right - the location of the bunker on Agrakans overview map is incorrect. I believe that one part of it in the east - was even UNDER the Old Reichskanzlei. The crucial staircase leading up to the emergency-exit in the Kanzlei Gardens was, according to the more reliable drawings a square affair that led up to ground level via two platforms - each of the approximate length of the width of the concrete block that constituted the emergency exit.

Robhill - I preempted without reading your post properly, since most queries about 'the staircase' refer to the one between Hitlers 'deep bunker' and the ground level. The staircase between the 'Vorbunker' and Hitlers Führerbunker was indeed - not a spiral - but a half-moon job - as evidenced by Hein's quite accurate drawing.
