Painting shadows on buildings.......

#1

Post by Erik E » 14 Jul 2005, 23:10

Hello!

Some time ago down in Marseille, I thought the shadow painted on the wall in the background here was just "modern art"..... However, I recall seeing similar shadows in other sites, and now, finally an original wartime photo showed up with a similar figure!!

Now over to you guys...... Who is he?? Have any of you seen him somewhere else :)

Yes. The campaign "Feind hört mit" was initiated by Joseph Goebbels with the beginning of the war. It's symbol was the "shadow man". Every german was considered as possible bearer of (military) secrets. And every place could be observed by an enemy spy. The brits had a similar campaign of which the slogan was "the walls have ears".

Erik,
Your shadow man reminded me of this picture in "Per Røed - Den ukjente sabotør" Mortensen, 1988. ISBN: 82-527-1003-4.
This is from the frontcover of "Draussen von dem Zaun lauert der Saboteur" = Outside the fences, the Saboteur are lurking.
Probably some kind of fibel that the Wb.n Norwegen(?) printed in about 250 000 copies to the troops for dealing with bombs and sabotage, anyone seen this fibel?

It was used to remind Germans that an enemy spy can be anywhere. Werwolfs were sabotage and guerilla units.

Hello all,

found some further examples. The wall paintings of the shadow man were the result of a propaganda campaign in January 1944. First only the silhouettes were painted which led to quite some speculations amongst the people. Day later, after attention had been gained the slogans were added.
