Spoils of War - Hitler
I thought it would be interesting to post some images of war trophies being presented to famous people. Does anyone have such images which they could also post? I have another one with Guderian receiving the remnants of a French unit standard, and one of Goebbels with a Cossack sword presented to him by the "Grossdeutschland" Division which I'll put up at some point.
The first image is from the dust jacket of MIT HITLER IN POLEN, and shows Hitler being presented with the standard of the 8th Polish Motorized Rifles. Who knows what happened to the flag....
The second one (from "Illustrierter Beobachter" No. 18/1941 - though it only appears in some editions of the magazine!) shows him being presented with a plaque from the spot in Sarajevo where the Serb terrorist Gavrilo Princip assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in 1914, thus precipitating the First World War. The plaque was given to him by three Kriegsberichter. It was kept in the Berlin Zeughaus along with the railroad coach from Compiegne - who knows where this has gone to as well...possibly destroyed in an air raid?

Do you have a scan of the cover of the magazine Illustrierte Beobachter that featured the Gavrilo Princip plaque? Do you have the caption for the photo, the story that accompanied it? Austrian author Ernst Trost used a different photograph of this scene in his 1966 book Das blieb vom Doppeladler.

Re: Spoils of War - Hitler
As mentioned, this photo appeared in IB 18/1941 - cover shows Hitler and Goering shaking hands. It does not appear in all copies of this number, however. Where it's present, it shows up on p. 542. There's just the photo (quite large) and the caption:
"The Glorification of a Shameful Deed disappears". On June 28, 1914, the royal couple were murdered in Sarajevo by the Bosnian Serb Princip. This crime by a Serbian group of conspirators sparked the World War. The Serbs marked the spot of the atrocity with an "Ehrentafel", which has now been taken down by Volksdeutsche and was presented to the Fuehrer by the Wehrmacht. Adolf Hitler has directed its transfer to the Zeughaus."
The current issue of "After the Battle" (No. 165) contains (in addition to this photo) some interesting photos of the plaque in situ pre-1941, in the hands of the Volksdeutsche, and on display in the Zeughaus.

A question for jeffhan373.... I've got an issue of the IB without that photo. I'd not realized published issues differed that much. Any information on what editions were published?

Re: Spoils of War - Hitler
Hi Randy -
I've collected the IB for a good many years, and I still can't figure out their system. For a while they were engaging in numerous issues with the same dates but with different covers and/or interiors. (One issue from 1938 bears three totally different covers!). Since there were no regional editions, unlike the VB, it's hard to figure out why this was done. In a few cases, it's late breaking news. In others, I'm sure NS leaders objected to unflattering portraits and had the offending images yanked. But some of them don't fall into any of these categories.
The best way to identify a variant cover/page is by the presence of an asterisk next to the page number (or issue date). This indicates that this page does not appear in all copies of the press run.
There were all sorts of different editions published, as with most German magazines - a Reich edition, a Continental edition, two completely different "Ausgabe A" editions, an "Ausgabe B" edition, etc. It's the changes, marked with the asterisk, in the Reich edition that are the hardest to figure out...

Re: Spoils of War - Hitler
It was the 8th Mounted Rifle Regiment.jeffhan373 wrote:The first image is from the dust jacket of MIT HITLER IN POLEN, and shows Hitler being presented with the standard of the 8th Polish Motorized Rifles. Who knows what happened to the flag....
And it was a pennant from one of the four ceremonial/fanfare trumpets issued to that Regiment.
The original, and much larger standard can be seen here.
Re: Spoils of War - Hitler
Thanks for the information on the IB issue no. 18 from May 1, 1941. I was able to obtain an original copy of that issue. The page with the Gavrilo Princip plaque examined by Adolf Hitler was marked with an ASTERISK in my issue. Only page 542 had an asterisk. My take is that this was added later because the photo was taken on April 20, 1941. The earlier photos on page 542 were taken on April 10, 1941, after Zagreb had been taken. So most likely this plaque photo was added to later printings. My edition also has a copyright listing in English for an office in New York. Was this an international edition? Do you have any scans from the After the Battle No. 165 issue from 2014 that feature the Princip plaque?
I have attached two photos of the plaque on display at the Zeughaus museum.
There are at least three different versions of the plaque photo being examined by Hitler. I have attached the two other photos. Do you have any idea where these two other photos come from or their source?
Finally, how can I obtain a copy of the no. 165 issue of After the Battle?

Re: Spoils of War - Hitler
The issue of After the Battle with the Sarajevo article is No. 164, not 165. My error. All back issues of this fine magazine are available from RZM Imports in Connecticut.
The IB had an international edition, or more accurately a European edition, which ran until issue 17/45. They continued to print the notation (in English) "Entered as second class matter, Post Office New York, NY" until August 1942.
