Here is a part of the photo from the Tschammer und Osten funeral. Is it Franz Breithaupt in the picture?

Obviously the commemorative service for Luigi Drago, the Italian Consul General in Bordeaux, killed by the Résistance on 17 May 1943. The photos are from the possession of notorious Neonazi Alexi Erlanger, who is said to have been Drago's stepson. There seems to be some confusion about when the bombing took place, but in a letter dated 19 May Drago's successor as Acting Consul General wrote that he died on 17 May and that the ceremony would take place on 20 May. I would assume that Drago's remains were subsequently taken home to Italy (see the link below).

I wonder who had the last state funeral held during the Third Reich. The latest I have found is that of SS-Gruppenführer Josef Fitzthum, which took place in Vienna on January 20, 1945. The VB ran a very detailed article on this ceremony called "Der Reichsgau Wien nimmt Abschied von Josef Fitzthum" in its edition of January 21, 1945. (photo attached).

Btw, Hitler specifically ordered no state funeral for Roland Freisler. His death received almost no mention in the German press - one line on the front page of a February 1945 VB is all I've seen.

If I remember correctly, the last state funeral was held for Wolfgang Lüth, U-boat ace?

Well, technically not a Third Reich state funeral, since Lueth's death took place after the Third Reich and its creator had expired. But I take your point: clearly a Third Reich era funeral. I'm surprised that Dönitz got the British to go along with this, even to the extent of having a swastika draped coffin...

Jeffhan373,

I apologize for making an off-topic post, but in a post I found through google you mentioned having a photo of Goebbels with a Cossack sword presented to him by the "Großdeutschland" Division. My grandfather came home from the war with a Cossak sword he said belonged to Goebbels that he got off a train near Brenner Pass. Would it be possible for you to post or send me that photo. I've been trying to find a way to authenticate the swords origin.

Thanks!

This was not a state funeral, but it was a party funeral:

-(29. 6. 1943)

Hitler ordered the "Parteibegräbnis" for HDL Fritz Schmidt.

Schmidt was killed the day before!!! If Schmidt had lived a little longer he may have been named Reichskommissar in Belgien ????? Apparently, Schmidt had returned to his Generalkommissar post via the Führerhauptquartier on (February 6, 1943) boasting to co-workers & friends about his supposed imminent appointment to the Reichskommissar in Belgien. It was not to be!!!!

Major Nowotny was afforded the Wien Staatsbegräbnis on November 14, 1944.

Jeffhhan373- I believeve you're right. Josef Fitzthum's state funeral is the last one that I've been able to find. If someone knows of another to be the last state funeral of the Third Reich I'd be very interested in that information.

alexi never mentioned very much on either his father in Moscow in the Russian imperial army divorced from his mother , or his step father luigi. all he said was his step father had died. he and his mom lived within a two mile radius from me. didn't know him but have all his papers and fotos . interesting to find out the demise of drago. alexi had temporarily worked as an interpreter for drago at the Italian consulate in Bordeaux.
