Goebbels smoking a cigareete right next to hitler...I thought Hitler hated smoking?

He did and I'm surprised; first I had no idea the Dr. smoked, and then of course like you in front of AH.

I know what you mean...you would think his chief lieutenants would surely know better and refrain in his presence. I was very surprised by this photo..Hitler was also Chancellor when this was taken so this makes it even more surprising (it's not a matter of "the early years" or a snapshot of a scene in some smoke-filled beer hall - this was taken in the old Reichschancellery)....I already knew Goebbels smoked cigarettes as there are many photos of the little doctor indulging his habit, but right next to Hitler??? Supposedly unheard of but the photo says differently. Maybe the reports that Hitler banned smoking in his presence was an exaggeration or maybe even a myth, although many servants and orderlies of the Berghof attest that this was so. We know Hitler hated smoking and drinking as institutions but it seems he did not deprive his collaborators of their habits - for instance, he tolerated Robert Ley's alcoholism and outlandish behavior for years (even to the point of calling Ley his "greatest idealist").

JG didn´t smoke.

He´s not smoking in this photo, he have the fingers in his mouth.

He looks likes a cigarrette but if you pay attention is just the reflection from the glass of the picture on the wall.

Hitler himself, who attributed Nazi (and therefore German) triumphs to the fact that he had quit smoking, prohibited Eva Braun from smoking in his presence and continually chided Goring for the latter's ever-present cigar. (Goebbels, an erstwhile chain smoker, succeeded in kicking the habit in 1944, only to succumb again after the Stauffenberg plot nearly took the Fuhrer's life that July.)

I do not know how to post you-tube videos yet, but if you go to you-tube and type in "Rarest document on you tube? 1939 Hitler and friends" you will find a short video from Eva Braun's films at the Berghof which shows Goebbels smoking a cigarette at approx. 1:21 time of the video.
