Re: Streicher dancing
I remember this photo from an earlier thread. I think people were wanting to know who the woman was in the photos.
I don't think it was answered but we assumed it was Streicher's second wife who was much younger than he. Although a stub of man at 5'5", Streicher was always the battling Stormtrooper, whip in hand or tucked in his belt - the prototype of the modern day Skinhead.
Streicher was a bullish figure and not one to be messed with. He was tough, thugish, and had a vicious mouth when crossed. Accounts purport that he boasted of whipping Social Democrats in jail and asking about the masturbation habits of adolescents (source: "Justice at Nuremberg" by Robert E. Conot). Streicher's home at Plattersdorf is still there and looks pretty much the same as it did when Streicher owned it (see Geoff Walden's website www.thirdreichruins.com ).
The house was shaped like a U and was built over a pigsty (Streicher took up farming in his "retirement" after 1940).
I think Streicher also began watercoloring /painting landscapes (he was painting when he was surprised by American GI's). He claimed not to smoke or drink alcohol but there are plenty of pictures of him in pubs drinking beer with the "locals". He read and studied the Bible, highlighting and writing in it's margins (see the book "Hitler's Fatal Sickness" for a few words on Streicher's Bible). He hated Wili Liebel (the Nuremberg Mayor) and had him shot at war's end (Speer, "The Spandau Diaries"). He also got into a bitter feud with Dr. Benno Martin (Hohere SS) and threatened to thrash him with a whip (Martin vowed he would shoot Streicher dead on the spot if he acted upon that threat). source: Conot, "The Limits of Hitler's Power" by Edward Petersen.

Sorry, I missed that. It must have been when I was in the nursing home.

Re: Streicher dancing
Correction: Streicher named his house "Pleikershof" (not "Plattersdorf")....pictures of his home can be seen at geoff Walden under "miscellaneous sites".
Re: Streicher dancing
for sure Herr Streicher was the ugliest man of the 3rd Reich and I don't know (sometimes I wonder) how a woman like Leni Riefenstahl had an affair with this repulsive and disgusting creature!

Re: Streicher dancing
Streicher slept with many women. He was very proud of that and boasted of it. Col. Burton C. Andrus states in his book "I Was The Nuremberg Jailer" that Streicher told a Russian interpreter while he was undressing "Want to see something nice?"...he demanded that if a woman were made available, they'd see how good of shape he was in for the trial. Robert E. Conot states in "Justice at Nuremberg" that Streicher was also proud of his "emissions", saving the semen for display. That tidbit seems more along the line of fantasy but I would have to check Conot's footnotes to find out where he got that information. Streicher was so associated in the collective mind with pornography, lewdness, and everything disgusting about Nazi Germany that it entered the realm of myth and fantasy. One woman who adored Streicher and spent much time with him (although not sexually, she became like a family member) was Unity Mitford, who often stayed with the Streichers whilst visiting Germany. It's possible she may have had dated one of Streicher's sons, but the Old Man became an object of endearment, and she wrote many letters to her sisters attesting to this.
What is your source for a sexual affair between Riefenstahl and Streicher? I'd not heard that before. I don't think it's mentioned in any books about her. One particular book discussed their professional relationship which began during her filming of "Triumph of the Will" (the book is "Leni Riefenstahl: The Fallen Film Goddess")...they were on very good terms and the author of the book shows some of their letters, which were friendly and warm but do not indicate a sexual relationship or affair.

Re: Streicher dancing
Michal - great picture! This was taken shortly after his capture. Streicher complained bitterly to the IMT that these men tortured him. "I was forced to kiss the feet of negroes. I was stripped naked, beaten, cigarettes to the nipples. When I asked for some water, they held me down and spat in my mouth. When I closed my mouth, they pried it open with a wooden stick." I am paraphrasing a quote but the account comes from Montgomery Belgon's "Victor's Justice" (1946). Belgon was no Nazi sympathiser but he spoke out about how the Nazi leaders were treated.
Re: Streicher dancing
Hi J and Michal – do either of you know who took the picture of Streicher right after his capture? And do you know if there are other pictures like this taken right after his capture? Just trying to cross-reference a picture I received from a veteran (I'm a reporter with a show called This American Life, working on a story about WWII intelligence).
Any additional info you have, I'd be so grateful!

Perhaps I can help a little. While I do not know who took the photo of Streicher after his capture (seen above), the same image is part of the Yad Vashem Photo Archive collection:kduffin wrote:Hi J and Michal – do either of you know who took the picture of Streicher right after his capture? There is also this image of Streicher (left), and probably Major Plitt (right).

And this image, source identifies Plitt as being on the right:

Regarding where the photos were taken, that is hard to say. The first one (Streicher emerging from a doorway surrounded by GI's) could have been taken in Waidring where Streicher was captured, which is what I suspect. The other two in this post may perhaps be in Berchtesgaden, Salzburg or elsewhere along the route Streicher was taken after his capture. One of the resident experts here regarding Berchtesgaden is Geoff Walden, perhaps he can help? You might try messaging him here on the forum.
Do you know when or where Major Plitt handed off Streicher to others after the arrest? That would narrow down the locations the photos with Plitt in them along with Streicher could have been taken.
Hope this helps. Would you please let us know when your program will be released? I am interested in it. Thanks!
Re: Streicher dancing
Interesting photos and discussion. I have to say that I still do not understand why he was part of Nürnberg trial and was sentenced to death. Strange person, but as far as I understand his role, without decision powers ... .

Re: Streicher dancing
Just ran across this thread (the title caught my eye).
Indeed, the two photos of Streicher after capture, in top coat and hat, were taken in Berchtesgaden - at the Kanzlei in Stanggass. In these photos taken a couple years ago, you can see the same secondary doorway with the two distinctive small windows that appears in the background of both 1945 photos, with the main doorway and the large marble eagle to the right.

You've got a great eye, Geoff -- right on the money! It's Lammers' adjunct chancellery office building in Bischofswiese, outside of Berchtesgaden.
