Those with an interest in DE Standards might find the attached photo of interest. It shows the Austrian "Salzburg erwache" Standarte on the day it was consecrated - August 12, 1923.
It's evident that, though the central design is identical, it is not the same flag usually seen as the Salzburg Standarte, in Ulric's flag book and in many period references (Illus. 2). Possibly this early banner wore out and the central design was re-incorporated on the more familiar banner seen in illus. 2.
The 1923 photo comes from a huge wartime book on the Austrian NSDAP's Kampfzeit from 1919 to 1938, "Der Freiheitskampf der Ostmark-Deutschen" (Graz: Stocker, 1942). This book contains loads of illustrations new to me, mostly supplied by the Hauptarchiv der NSDAP and various Gau archives. It commands steep prices but is well worth chasing for historians of the early years of the NSDAP....

Re: "Salzburg Erwache" Standarte
Thanks, Jeff - never saw the upper photo before. The lower one was taken in Berchtesgaden during an SA rally in July 1932 (shown in Hoffmann's "Das braune Herr" (1932).
