Hello to you all
I was reading Michael Wildt's book on RSHA leadership and I noticed a very interesting thing, membership of the NSDAP was not very common among early SS and SA members. Indeed men were members of the SA, SS, SD and finally they would join the NSDAP. From the book I got the impression that membership of the SS was far more important than the NSDAP despite the fact that the NSDAP financed the SS until the SS absorbed the Reich's security services.
My question is was membership of the NSDAP, the SS and the SA mutually exclusive? If not when did membership of the NSDAP became compulsory to SS and SA members?
Membership of the NSDAP, SS and SA mutually Exclusive?

Re: Membership of the NSDAP, SS and SA mutually Exclusive?
The entry in NSDAP is independant of the entry in SS, SA.
Some SS members don't want or were accepted late during the war.
On the other hand Party member must be accepted into SS.
Some senior active SS leaders were never Pg.
SS-Ogruf. Karl Demelhuber Befehlshaber der Waffen-SS Nld
SS-Ogruf. Hanns-Albin Rauter HSSPF Nld (former austrian)
SS-Gruf. Karl von Treuenfeld Inspekteur In. 6 in SS-FHA
SS-Gruf. Karl Sauberzweig K.G. IX W. Geb. A. Korps
On the other hand you can see that a number of SS members from 30's were accepted late in NSDAP with very high number.
i.e. SS-Brif. Otto Abetz Botschafter in Frankreich SS 253 314 NSDAP 7 011 453
SS-Gruf. August Meyszner HSSPF Serbien SS 283 406 NSDAP 6 119 650
SS-Gruf. Heinrich Müller Chef Amt IV (Gestapo) SS 107 043 NSDAP 4 583 199 (he was member of Bavarian Political Police prior 1933 and was then not partisan of the NSDAP.

Thank you very much.
So does this mean that it is safe to say that those who never joined the NSDAP but were SS and SA members were committed Nazis rather than opportunistic careerists?

I'm afraid. It's not so simple.
