SA and NSDAP in Łódź/Litzmannstadt 1939-1945

#1

Post by sylvieK4 » 25 Nov 2003, 15:56

Does anyone have any information about the membership strength and activities of the S.A, N.S.D.A.P and Hitler Youth in Litzmannstadt (Łódź, Poland)?

From what I understand, Lodz, Poland always had a sizeable population of Volksdeutsch. Some of these were actively pro-Nazi before the 1939 invasion of Poland. After the invasion, and after Lodz's incorporation into Greater Germany as Litzmannstadt, many continued to support the Nazi regime as members of the NSDAP. Perhaps some post-invasion members of the Party and/or organizations such as the SA, NSKK, HJ etc, in the region were not long-time residents and had relocated there since 1939.

In any event, does anyone have any information about the Party and Party organizations in the Łódź / Litzmannstadt area, how many persons were members, and what their activities were, 1939-1945?

Any info and/or photos of Party members and their activities in the Łódź/Litzmannstadt area are welcome.

Thanks! :)

In the photo below - showing locals welcoming Heer troops into Łódź, Poland on Sept. 8, 1939 - we can see that there was apparently a good deal of support among Lodz Volksdeutsch for the invasion and the German regime.

Again, any information about the NSDAP, and other Nazi Party organization in Łódź/Litzmannstadt before and / or after the 1939 invasion will be greatly appreciated.

Hello SylvieK

Reading your post reminded me that I have a polish book at home entitled the 5th Column. It describes the German 5th Column in Poland before WWII. I'll verify if it contains anything valuable about NSDAP organization in Łódź/ Litzmannstadt.

I'll give you an answer tomorrow.

SylvieK

I verified the information about the book The 5th Column and must say that I don't have much info about Nazi activity in Lodz during the war. The book covers Poland in only two chapters. The other chapters cover 5th column's activities in USA, France, Skandinavia, etc. Also, for Poland, there is a lot of info about diversive activities in Silesia and Prussia but not that much about Great Poland and especially not about the city of Łódź.

On the other hand, I found a paragraph that talks about diferent nazi organizations that existed in Łódź in the prewar years: Jungdeutsche Partei in Polen and Deutscher Volks Verband. The mission of those organization was to penetrate the polish sociaty and to sabotage its activities. They were lead by Herbert Mess, Rudolf Mess, Oswald Kadach, Erwin Rudert, Heinrich Bolz, Kurt Brauer, Alfred Hermanns, Kurt Rapke and Sigmund Puppe. Those men occupied, during the war, positions within the Gestapo, Einsatzgruppe III (the one created in 1939), special tribunals and most probably in the NSDAP. Herbert Mess became an NSDAP Kreisleiter and SS-Standartenführer....

It isn't much but hope that helps

Thank you, again, Starinov. Your post is indeed helpful! The list of names alone puts me on the trail to more information. Thanks again.

Anyone else with further information and/or photographs of any of the personalities mentioned above, NSDAP, S.A, HJ, etc activities in Łódź/Litzmannstadt, your posts are welcome here.

Thanks.

Their fate?

I noted that the young men in the photo and standing in the middle of the crowd are not saluting the passing soldiers. In fact I noticed that some of them are not even looking at them, rather they are looking straight ahead. Would this have been considered an act of defiance? This photo makes me wonder what became of them. I curious as to the origin of the photo. I assume this was an official state photo?

On a related note, I enjoy seeing the vast numbers of photos in this forum, in particular the colored photos. I've often wondered what some of the places looked like in full regalia. I hope to see more

Best Wishes
Steve :D

Quote of Steve Arthur:

I doubt it. It appears that they are all a part of the same group performing crowd control duty to allow the Germans to parade through. I think it is more respect than defiance in that case.

Speaking of that, Steve, I recently found this photo postcard online of this Łódź/Litzmannstadt street scene. It is said to show Lodz's "Piotrkowska" street - renamed by the Germans "Adolf-Hitler-Straße". Enjoy!

Does anyone have any biographical/ service information, and-or additional photographs of Karl Marder, Mayor of German Litzmannstadt?

(I checked the A.B.R, but he wasn't listed. :( )

Here is one photo I found on line of Marder in his SS uniform:

what amazes me the most about the color photos, are the numbers in existence. Color film developing was very expensive at the time and I would have imagined that would have limited the numbers produced.

Thank you for sharing that example as well

Hi Chrish,

Ludwig Wolff was 01.05.1940 - 28.02.1942 Kreisleiter des Kreises Litzmannstadt-Stadt der NSDAP

The real name of Kreisleiter Knaup was Xaver Knaup.

Have you more info of SA-Oberführer Wilhelm Kretschmar?
SA-Standartenführer Ganser is unknown. I known only SA-Standartenführer Eugen Gansser.
