salute

What is the uniform code on salutes and what situation (rank, service, event, or person) requires which.

I ask because I see three different salutes.

1) arm straight up with hand flat (most troops)
2) elbow bent with hand back and flat (hitler mostly does this)
3) hand to forehead temple (seen luftwaffe do this)

Also, when they yell "ZEEK" and "HEIL" what is that in english.

Thanks to all!

They are saying "Sieg Heil!" which means "Hail Victory!"

The fingertips to temple salute was standard for the army and navy before the Nazi period, and many military personnel continued this tradition through World War II. I don't know about etiquette for the National Socialist salute, but I have seen newsreels of officers giving both kinds you described above. I imagine for formal, parade occassions, the stiff armed salute was used most.

As far as the Nazi salute being a requirement for military personnel, maybe someone else knows. I do not believe it was an absolute requirement on all occasions, and that the old-style fingertips to temple salute was acceptable in the Wehrmacht forces (that is, the Heer, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe).

If I remember correctly, it became the standard salute after the attempt on Hitlers life 1944.

Arm straight ahead, hand flat, = regulation
Arm bent, hand flat/or relaxed = sloppy salute (yes AH did that also sometimes).
Hand to edge of cap, ( not forehead) = non nazi military salute

Sieg Heil - Victory Hail ( Hail victory) HN.

There was a discussion in this subject on my swedish forum a while ago, and one theory there (which sounds good to me) was that the first was used when saluting someone and the second was used when recieving a salute.

I would assume that is true. I doubt it's a "sloppy salute" because it is to the extreme back. Although to the forehead would be... have I been out that long that I don't even remember how to do it lol. Also, I guess it wasn't the Luftwaffe I seen do it.

I'm a newbie

in siegfried knappe's memoirs, he wrote because hitler was suspicious of the heer after the attempt on hitler's life, so he made all servicemen to do the facsist salute.

Adolfs salute was like that because he was sitting on drivers seat of his Beetle (notoriously cold car in winters) trying to determine is heater functioning...

About the "straight arm" salute-

Was the arm supposed to be level with the shoulder or was the arm supposed to shoot up into the air at an angle?
Regards,
Zachary

Whta about the kriegsmarine salute? unlike the heer salute, the kriegsmarine salute is with the entire hand facing the front instead just on the side..I saw Captain Hans Langsdorff doing it during funeral of his men killed in Uruguay..

About the Sieg Heil...which one is more widely used, Heil Hitler or Sieg Heil?

Sieg Heil was used in meetings; Heil Hitler (Heitler :| ) was used as a personal greeting; as in entering an establishment, or greeting a party member. HN.

HaEn,
So "Heil Hitler" kind of replaced "hello"?

Yes to an extend, except that Germans of the time were not that informal; they would say Good Morning etc. or in the southern part Gruss Gott. Just from memory. HN

I read in Maxim magazine last month that Hitler took the stiff armed Nazi salute from American cheerleaders doing it, being a symbol for victory.

Now Maxim is a rather goofy mag, but they usually don't lie when they come up with weird facts like this (unless, of course, I'm really gullable, which may be very likely...)
