These drawings of low boots from the ad ring a bell with me especially, I guess, because I just found an original pair (some sort of rubber, fur-lined, and still watertight, as far as I can tell after wearing them today).....

....and also because there are great photos of them in wear in wartime Paris:

Lighter shoes, also from wartime Paris. The second and third photos show the platform soles that were popular during the period--the 1970s had nothing new on the 1940s! These appear to be of carved wood. Wooden soles became a necessity in the occupied countries because of the lack of leather during the Occupation.....

...but the necessity took on a life and creativity of its own, a testament to women's fashion-consciousness and "making do" in the pursuit of it, as shown in André Zucca's occupied Paris photos of what one would scarcely notice as wooden-soled shoes.

A favorite pair of period shoes (I'd say late '30s) in my own collection:

Finally, one last shoe photo. (For the men viewing, there is a shoe in the picture--at the bottom of the photo. )

Best,

Thank you for this lovely miniature, Vikki! It really made my day. Looks like you know more of your audience than we do ourselves.

But then: Didn't Miss Manners write men should choose women they can look up to eternally? Perhaps me foolish stranger just misunderstood something there :?

Best regards
Torsten

Oh, somehow I think you understood Miss Manners' saying perfectly, Torsten.

What I've always heard is that men can't resist seamed stockings. :D

Nice photos Viiki. Women's shoes have not changed much over the years.
Here's a photo of formal wear.

Cheers,
Larry

Yes, from the "Ueberschuh" in the ad. But, Roman, what's the exact meaning of "Lackgummi"? I know that "Gummi" is rubber, but "Lackgummi"?

Best,

Lackgummi is rubber which is protected by a special varnis called Lexan. It´s a polycarbonat thermoplastic resin (hope I translate it well), and today it´s used mostly by airbrushers and industry. The advantage over normal varnish is that Lexan is elastic when it is dry, and not rough and breakable as standard varnish.

Thanks Roman! I think your translation is great (though I don't completely understand the technical terms), and the use of it for boots makes sense. Do you know whether "Lackgummi" was/is a brand name?
