Growing up in post-war Brooklyn with WW2 vets and holocaust survivors, a common epithet used was "Hotsy-totsy, another dead Nazi" when anything good or celebratory happened. There were also a number of ditties and songs deriding & ridiculing the defeated Nazis around at that time. Not surprising the actual Nazis didn't like that handle.

As I understand it, and I have only been studying since 2013, Nazi is an abbreviation for Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP in German.

BUT... Though I can't begin to think of the Google terms to figure your question out (I tried, will continue), I do recall something faintly about this POSSIBLY being disrespectful. So in the novel I am writing, about a young German man's war experience, I refer to the Party, rather than saying Nazi. Unless, of course, it is someone who dislikes the Party.

Dehumanization was kind of a necessity for training Allied (or any) soldiers. If a soldier were to think that his enemy is just "a-nice- family-guy-like-me-fighting-for-his-country-and-doesn't-want-to-be-here-any-more-than-me", he'll probably end up with a bullet in his head. Yes, we called them NAZIs and the Germans called us "filthy Capitalist Jews".
Pretty sure we, and everyone else, engages in the same nonsense today. It is up to the citizen to realize the truth... that we have a great deal more in common with each other, than we have in common with some *cough* of our own leaders and their geopolitical designs.

Or maybe that is my own opinion. I'm too much of a mama (and a young one, at that, with peace loving parents) to want my kids to kill other mama's kids, and I realize that none of our kids benefit very much from death and resource grabs.

(Okay, I shut my mouth now, no more political nonsense from me!)

LOL.... Yeah, that's pretty derogatory. I wouldn't recommend doing it, to folks of either nationality. ;)

True, but Hitler himself never called himself a "Nazi" he always referred to himself and the other party members as National Socialists.

I remember an old thread from years ago on this same topic.

Someone did research & found excepts from the Goebbels diaries where Goebbels wrote, "Wir Nazis" (we Nazis) and wrote of someone he disliked, "Er ist kein Nazi." (He's no Nazi.)

IMHO that proved that the term "Nazi" was not derogatory, as Goebbels referred to himself as a Nazi.

Wich was a waste of a good pun, as the correct pronounciation is "nutsy".
