Your correct Raul,

I have talked to more than several people in one occupied country who were there
all at the same time and they all had different opinions and experiences.

Should also say some were not bad and others what you would expect.

Although those people in occupied countries had to deal with the police, security forces, officials, bureaucrats not the Wehrmacht.
Soldiers encountered in an occupied country were there on leave looking for fun, or/and selling/buying stuff. They were not keen on seeing the police themselves. They usually weren't dangerous.
The others were, although as they were humans too it was possible to do business with them (most of the territories were kleptocracy/bribery heaven anyway, and both sides contributed heavily to that), or even make friends.
for example my family's neighbour was good friends with the local German policemen, despite the fact he was a member of the local underground self-defense unit, and sheltered Jews. Even though earlier they took part in the executions of all the local Jews, it seems he genuinely liked those Germans.

Two personal examples:
Wiślica, świętokrzyskie (present population: 666): German officer billeted in home of later-to-be wife of my first cousin. The officer told her that he had seen her brother with a pistol in the brother's bedroom. The brother should get rid of it or there would be consequences.
Kolosy, świętokrzyskie (present population; 473): German Army ammunition depot outside the village. My aunt said the locals "co-existed" with the German soldiers.

.
stories of my uncle from a small village in occupied France
the Germans came in 1940 , their troops flowing for two days over the local bridge .
very correct ,a soldier being publicly punished on the market place for some misbehavior
the locals cursing the French gendarmes rounding up local boys who had straggled back home to send them to prisoner camp in Germany

spring of 1941 , most of the horses got purchased by the Germans ,paid for with near worthless occupation money

1943 , some partisans in the scevolle forest , always active much further away , a fox do not steal chicken close to its lair
the local commander mounting very slow, very noisy patrols , on a regular schedule , they never were shot at
it seems there was a mutual desire to avoid each others

1944 , some local arrested by the French milice with gestapo after a parachute drop , send to concentration camp , delation by someone of the village is taken as fact , payback for long held grievances ,the women crazy about the parachute silk for making underwear

July 1944 , elements of Das Reich moving from the South pass through , got shot at , a few people arrested
everybody is a resistant except some girls who get their heads shaved for having slept with German soldiers ,
making business with them must have been OK , a few public officials are very sick and resign

spring of 1945 , return of the war prisoners of 1940 , as farm boys most spend the war on German farms ,
those in city factories didn't have it so good , one of those send to camps came back , very ,very thin with a tatooed number

Giving some help to enemy soldiers is perfectly legal (excluding totalitarian countries), those soldiers were not monsters but people like them.
Furnishings information about their own army is not. It's even forbidden to force civilians to do so.
German civilians were giving "some help" to Russian soldiers in the same way in 1945.

Those children waving to the German soldiers for the heck of it - because that was something cool that happened among the usual rural boredom, with the same enthusiasm would have later shot at them for the same heck of it.

And - people living in the rural areas have to be careful not to antagonize an invading soldiers, and always were - because they were totally on their own, without even the protection that numbers give in towns/cities.
Of course.
Though it still paints a different picture from the popular ideas, such as that all Germans walked in Poland and looked at all Polish civilians with racist hatred, like in the film "the pianist".
Of course maybe many on this forum might think this is ridiculous. But in alot of minds there is that image of a clearly segregated Polish & German people, who hated each other and would not even talk to each other.
This is what I love about these images: Images do not lie.
They represent true emotions, true events, etc...Whilst post-war writers with IDEAS do not (regardless of their political opinion).

Of course images also do not portray the full picture.
For example its well know that front line troops were usually nice with civilians (such as the soldier seen in picture), but the second line troops (support troops + Police) are hated by the civilians. Is this true or myth? Anyhow its oft repeated myth.

Hi..

This is very interesting...I am aware that the Netherlands had a lot of NS and German supporters. But have also come across a lot of Dutch resistance stories. The Dutch civilian population welcomed the allies joyously during Market Garden. Many Dutch people risked their lives in helping allied troops. After the allied defeat at Arnhem, apparently the Germans took harsh retribution on the local population. Even otherwise a lot of innocent hostages were shot by the Germans whenever there was any violent partisan activity.

I can see a major contradiction here. I would be very glad to reconcile these two opposing narratives. What exactly was it like? Can someone help pl?

Ciao
Sandeep
