If anyone is interested in separating the facts about stolen Nazi Gold from the fantasy this should start you off. No photos or index in the current edition anymore unfortunately but still in print after 31 years. Last reprinted edition 2014. Can be purchased internationally. Earlier versions contain maps, photos and indicies.

There is also a Polish version

and I think this is a later edition

I haven't read through this thread and indeed know very little about this rumour, but I'd like to ask here what did happen to Poland's gold after the invasion in September? Was it captured in Warsaw or evacuated? How much of Poland's gold was actually in the country at the time?

I think this is a valid theory too:

Or it could even be connected. This section being the extension of the first supposed location that's being investigated.

The KML file shows all the findings.

So, latest news I could find over internet:

1. Militarists informed that no hazardous materials or mines were found over the area.
2. Next stage in the search for the train is in the hands of local authorities, army will not be involved.

During WWII the Polish gold reserves were transferred to Canada along with the British gold reserves. I believe the Polish government in Warsaw had to take Canada to court for the return of its gold reserves and national treasures in 1961. Naturally the London based Polish government-in-exile and the emigre community opposed the return of these assets held for safe-keeping in Canada. The Polish gold reserves in Canada were used to pay Britain for war materiel supplied to Polish forces during WWII.
The Romanian government also received the treasury of the National Bank of Poland in 1939. One part of it, consisting of 1,261 crates containing 82,403 kg of gold, was loaded aboard a commercial ship in the port of Constanța, and transported to Western Europe. The transport was escorted by ships from the Romanian Navy, in order to prevent an interception by Soviet submarines in the Black Sea. The second part of the treasury was deposited in the Romanian National Bank. It was returned to Poland on 17 September 1947.

2PolCorps under Gen. Anders based in Italy had its own "gold" reserves which went "missing" after wars-end despite British attempts to find it and repatriate the assets to Poland. I believe these "missing" 2PolCorps assets ended up in Franco's Spain for safe-keeping after Anders to Spain visit in '46 or '47 facilitated by the Polish nationalist NSZ or Narodowe Sily Zbrojne leaders then based in France.

As in most occupied countries the Nazis regularly sent any gold they came across back to Germany. They did this with anything that was useful to the German war effort. There was absolutely no purpose in retaining any gold or other precious metals in Poland especially at that stage of the war. And even if there was they wouldn't be sending it to a city which had been encircled for several months or hiding it in an armoured train in or under a mountain in a country that was already being invaded by the Russians.

Unfortunately not many people consider the logical side of the argument. There may be the odd, minor exception to the above but you would be talking handfuls of stuff rather than crates of it.

Many of us love the thought of finding hidden Nazi treasure. Why not? Looking for it can be exciting, adventurous and even dangerous. However, sadly , I am not expecting anyone to find a train (armoured or otherwise), precious metals of any description, important period documents, bodies that have allegedly possibly been buried there or any booby traps. Unfortunately this is going to turn out to be a non event but, on the positive side, it is good for the local tourist industry.

Did you realize that this area was German before it became Poland after the war? Anyway, it still is very interesting and amazing, whether there is a mysterious train or not

Yes I did Reader 3000. Breslau was the encircled city I mentioned. I believe some of the suggestions had the train enroute to Breslau and others leaving it but, as with most myths and legends we have to rely on phrases like 'at the end of the war' rather than specifics. However if you have specifics it is easier to prove or disprove things. But yes it is interesting and it could go on for a while yet.

There are a few mistakes there. It wasn't the Government, it was an over-enthusiastic, high but otherwise unimportant governmental official that claimed the train was there for sure.
The entire operation was planned (poorly) and directed by the regional state bureaucracy. They hired the army to carry out the pointless search for mines, gas agents and radioactive materials. And now they are deliberating what should be done next. And it seems till the next spring they are not going to do anything.
There is nothing sinister going on there, just incompetent bureaucrats running around like headless chickens. Although on the other hand they are not required to do anything - but still a simple confirmation, double checking that something is there would be reasonable.
A nice aerial view of the site, as can be seen nothing could be done in secret there, the view from the nearest building and from the road is unobstructed and couldn't be better:

In Walim they are working much faster. In the nearest days they are going to drill a series of exploration holes (eight in total) to see what is there, tens of meters underground. The results will be available on 15 this month.

Surprisingly this man in an interview for a local tv station, standing before that old locomotive shed, has confirmed that a tunel was/is there. He is one the first Poles which arrived in Walim shortly after the WW2.
