George,
Thanks for keeping the thread going. Lots of great pictures!
Just recently I came across an interesting set of photos on Bundesarchiv covering the police in Kiev area in December 1942. They include both the German and local polizei carrying their daily routines.
Police department in Zarig, Kiev area. German bosses and local polizei.
Police department in Kiev area, with the local polizei hanging around.

Not too many times I have seen smiling Russians.
Understand the hardship of their lives but it is nice

Definitely not too many smiles in this thread. When one doesn't know what the new day will bring and whether he'll make through it to see the next day, it's a whole different frame of existence.Annelie wrote:Not too many times I have seen smiling Russians.

In the early stages of the war, people who joined the polizei were a privileged group compared to the masses. Much better access to food and life necessities altogether with sharp-looking uniforms and some power over regular folks (which frequently resulted in abuse). Personal accounts of the Nazi occupation often mention common dislike of the local polizei. Although, I suppose, some young women would consider a good-looking and single Schutzmann an attractive match.
From the same Bundesarchiv photo set: the Polizei carrying out their regular duties.
German gendarmes supervising dairy deliveries by local peasants. Interrogation of a thief at the police department. Interrogation of a bandit with a Schutzmann serving as an interpreter. The poster on the wall reads: Hitler Liberator.

The remaining photos from the Bundesarchiv set on the Polizei in Kiev area, all dated December 1942.
Day-to-day operations inside a police department where the Germans and locals worked side by side.
Police department garage. As the caption states, this police station was equipped with two vehicles. Fresh meat for daily meals for the Polizei. And a large bakery for the Polizei.
