Re: Photos of religious life ...
The article says this is a Galician Uniate Priest in SS uniform, but the cap looks like Luftwaffe to me.

The irony is vast in the photos. Wonder what the cleric was preaching? Turn the other cheek? Love thy neighbour? Or onward Christian soldiers?

Re: Photos of religious life ...
Military chaplains focus on the troops as persons, not the bigger picture. The wars would go on without them but then the troops would be without whatever assistance and compassion a chaplain provides.
In the US military chaplains are not allowed to preach anti-war to the troops, so that relieves them from that bind. Aside from religious duties many have some training in counseling and, nowadays, watching for signs of extreme stress, PTSD, etc. They can step in when a superior can't or might not be inclined to.

A member of Flak Regiment 25 visits his brother (left) who is a monk or priest, not sure which.

Nice, Larry. I especially like the earlier one of the brothers. You seem to be able to supply photos on just about any subject from your extensive collection. Thanks for sharing these!

Re: Photos of religious life ...
Thank you Vikki. My pleasure as always to share my photos here.
Here is another Heer chaplain who seems to be blessing an open grave somewhere in Russia. Note that steps have been cut into the end of the grave.
I forgot to mention that there is writing on the back of the Kriegspfarrer portrait I posted earlier which says: "Feldpost Nr. 02066."
I believe that from 28-4.1940 to 14-8-1940 this was Kriegslazarett Abt. 694. This site http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... itaets.htm states that up to 16 Kreigspfarrer were alloted to each Kriegslazarett Abteilung.
This seems a lot to me. It would be great to know how Chaplains were allotted to Divisions/Regiments, how they were contacted to perform religious services and what they did when not required to perform these services. it must have very difficult for them to do their duty in Russia especially as the war there turned against the Wehrmacht.
Cheers,
Larry
