German soldiers with english names?

#1

Post by ylla » 20 Sep 2014, 09:49

I recently learned there were many British living in Germany (some where supporters of Hitler) who migrated over to Germany over the years. Some British would be married to german men and women. Their offspring would be german citizens.

Now, quite possible, some german soldiers would carry english sounding name?

Hello,

there were such cases for sure. See for example this posting http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 6#p1838496 where an officer Harry John Booth is mentioned.

Best regards

Hello,

some details on Pitcairn are in this list http://ww2.dk/Lw%20Offz%20-%20L-R%20-%20Apr%202014.pdf .

And don't forget Luftwaffe fighter ace Gordon [Mac] Gollob. http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 5#p1622035
In the contemporary German press the Mac was dropped, Gordon being a first name strange enough for a German.

Nachname: family name
Vorname: christian name
Dienstgrad: rank
Geburtsdatum: birth date [dd].[mm].[yyyy]
Geburtsort: place of birth
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: date of KIA/MIA [dd].[mm].[yyyy]
Todes-/Vermisstenort: place of death/MIA

If their names aroused curiosity at all depended to a some degree on how they were pronounced. Booth for example, spoken the German way (which sounds something like 'boat') wouldn't be regarded as strange. Harry is a usual first name in Germany too and John (spoken like 'yone'] was common at least in the Hamburg area.

Best regards
Torsten

Many thanks on information. Very facinating stuff.

I know some german soldiers were named michael. Is michael a german name?

Would there be any chance of putting faces to thier names?

So most likly, they were not really discriminated by thier english names?
