Zur Erinnerung Görlitz?
I have recently acquired "medal" made of fired red clay that has the above sentiment on it. I was hoping somebody could tell me what it is about. Why does a beautiful city like Görlitz need remembering? If this is placed in the wrong place go ahead and move it. The "medal" is approx. 5 cm in diameter, and 3 mm thick. Thanks for any help.

Re: ZUR ERINNERUNG GÖRLITZ?
I tried to post photos but the site informed me that Görlitz was an "invalid file name" WTF?

Strange. Your computer did not like the word "Görlitz" for my photo! I changed the name of the photo to "Mystery", and it accepted that.

For some reason the new version of the software does not accept "special" characters in the filenames.

Thanks for the info Uwe, but that does not answer my question. Why remember Görlitz? Did something special happen there? It was part of Poland for awhile after WK 11. Is that it?

Re: Zur Erinnerung Görlitz?
Görlitz is still a splitted town since 1945 - part in germany named Görlitz and still niederschlesien (see my avatar)
and part of poland named Zgorzelec
so maybe its a memorial medal to a Silesian Convention

Re: Zur Erinnerung Görlitz?
I was hoping to get some info about the reason the medal was made, and when. I suppose it was made by Meissen. It looks like their work. I have several other Meissen pieces, including 3rd Reich Meissen. Does anybody have any ideas what this medal was issued to commemorate, and when it was made?

Dear Uwe,

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaisertrutz
The medal still shows the upper floor crowned with pinnacles. Actually these were removed in 1936 already (http://www.unser-goerlitz.de/de/denkmal/kaisertrutz) so the design must be older than that. It's noteworthy too that all typical Third Reich propaganda symbols and slogans are missing in the design. My idea at the moment is that the medal was sold by the museum after they'd moved in. That no particular event (like the museum's opening) is mentioned may be due to ensure a very long sales period. At the height of the Great Depression they cannot have expected to sell loads of them in a short while. And why should visitors in later years buy the thing when it mentions an event they didn't take part in? So the museum may have opted to have produced by Meissen just one batch of a timeless general purpose souvenir that could be sold for years (not knowing the pinnacles were soon to go).
The best advice I can give einwehrmann at the moment is to contact Kulturhistorisches Museum in Görlitz, the successor of Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum. Perhaps they know something about this kind of object.

sorry to say but you're mistaken. The medal shows the Kaisertrutz bastion in Görlitz which since 1932 housed parts of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum.schwarzermai wrote:it shows the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater

Re: Zur Erinnerung Görlitz?
Thanks Torsten: Now it all makes sense. I thought the medal was commemorating something bad that happened, when in fact it was merely a souvenir so that you could remember your trip to Görlitz.
